2001 NBA Trades

Chicago received Soumalia Samake, 2003 second round pick (#45-Matt Bonner) for Jake Voskuhl and finished with a modest realized-value edge.

Los Angeles Clippers earned a modest hindsight edge over Portland Trail Blazers in the 2001-10-29 exchange, with Will Perdue providing the better overall return.

In a three-team trade, Cleveland acquired Ricky Davis from Miami and Brian Skinner from Toronto; Miami acquired Chris Gatling from Cleveland; Toronto acquired Don MacLean and cash from Miami.

Charlotte obtained George Lynch, Jérôme Moïso, Robert Traylor and Chris Porter in an October 25, 2001 three-team trade. Philadelphia received Derrick Coleman, Corie Blount and Vonteego Cummings. Golden State acquired cash, Cedric Henderson and a conditional 2005 first later associated with Joey Graham. The inherited slight 76ers edge grades Philadelphia and Golden State B and Charlotte C+.

Denver acquired Scott Williams and a conditional 2004 first-round selection from Milwaukee in October 2001. Houston received Kevin Willis through the Bucks, while Milwaukee obtained Aleksandar Radojević from Denver and Houston's 2002 second-round right, later used on Dan Gadzuric. The original Nuggets Win assigns Denver A-, Houston B and Milwaukee C. Contemporary records confirm the entire three-team chain, which was incomplete in the Denver-only imported ledger.

The 2001-10-01 exchange produced broadly comparable realized value: 2003 conditional second round pick (#53-Tommy Smith) for rights to Sean Lampley.

Dallas sent Kenny Satterfield to Denver for a conditional future second-round pick that was not exercised.

Detroit won the deal, acquiring Jon Barry, 2003 first round pick (#25 – Carlos Delfino) for Mateen Cleaves.

Dallas received Tim Hardaway from Miami Heat and sent 2003 or 2004 second-round pick (Mavericks option) (2004 #53-Matt Freije); trade exception in return.

In a three-team transaction, Houston acquired Glen Rice plus Dallas's Kyle Hill rights and future consideration; New York received Shandon Anderson and Howard Eisley; Dallas received Muggsy Bogues and a trade exception.

Celtics Win. Boston Celtics earns A-; Philadelphia 76ers earns D. Boston moved a still-unproven young big man and obtained a forward plus a future first-round selection.

Cleveland exchanged Matt Harpring, Robert 'Tractor' Traylor and Cedric Henderson for Tyrone Hill and Jumaine Jones, with the realized return ultimately favorable to 76ers.

The Hakeem Olajuwon sign-and-trade was emotionally significant but competitively balanced.

Washington acquired center Brendan Haywood's draft rights from Orlando on August 1, 2001 for Laron Profit and a protected future first-round selection that ultimately became No. 20 in 2005. Haywood played 62 Wizards games as a rookie and 81 with 69 starts in 2002-03, beginning a long Washington tenure. Orlando's two incoming assets never produced comparable long-term NBA starts. On July 24, 2001, Portland acquired Derek Anderson; Steve Kerr; 2003 second round pick (#58-Andreas Glyniadakis) from San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Steve Smith (Delano).

Memphis acquired Pau Gasol’s draft rights, Lorenzen Wright and Brevin Knight for Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Jamaal Tinsley’s rights, creating the franchise’s first playoff centerpiece and a later value chain that included Marc Gasol.

Chicago exchanged second round pick (protected #51-57 in 2002, unprotected in 2003) (2002 #42-Jason Jennings) for Greg Anthony in a transaction with a narrow realized-value edge to Bulls.

New Jersey acquired Jason Kidd and Chris Dudley from Phoenix for Stephon Marbury, Johnny Newman and Soumaila Samake. Kidd transformed a 26-win Nets team into a 52-win conference champion and led consecutive Finals runs. Marbury remained an All-Star scorer, but Phoenix never approached the same team-level return.

Detroit won the deal, acquiring Clifford Robinson for Jud Buechler, John Wallace, $1.6M traded player exception.

Detroit acquired rights to Zeljko Rebraca from Toronto Raptors for 2002 second round pick (#37 – Tito Maddox); 2002 second round pick (#52 – Rasual Butler).

Chicago acquired Charles Oakley, 2002 second round pick (#42-Jason Jennings) from Raptors for Brian Skinner, producing a clear realized-value win.

On June 28, 2001, Los Angeles acquired Lindsey Hunter from Milwaukee in exchange for center Greg Foster. Hunter played all 82 Lakers games in 2001-02, making 47 starts and appearing in 18 playoff games during their NBA championship run. Foster played just six Bucks games, totaling 24 minutes and seven points. Lakers Win: Los Angeles B+, Milwaukee D+.

The Nets acquired rights to Richard Jefferson; rights to Jason Collins; rights to Brandon Armstrong from Rockets in exchange for rights to Eddie Griffin.

On June 27, 2001, Atlanta sent the draft rights to guard Jamaal Tinsley to Indiana for a protected future first-round pick that ultimately became No. 21 Boris Diaw in 2003. Tinsley became the Pacers' lead guard for several seasons, including their 2004 Eastern Conference Finals appearance. Diaw played two Atlanta seasons before the Hawks included him with picks in the separate 2005 Joe Johnson sign-and-trade. Pacers Win, Indiana A- for long-term playing production, Atlanta B for a useful future pick and trade asset.

In the 2001 NBA draft Atlanta sent Terence Morris's No. 34 rights to Houston for a conditional future first, later associated with the 2003 No. 25 selection. Morris played for the Rockets, while Atlanta later moved the incoming pick in a separate trade for Dan Dickau. The future first had value despite Atlanta never drafting Carlos Delfino with it.

The Clippers acquired 22-year-old Elton Brand for Brian Skinner and Tyson Chandler’s draft rights, receiving seven seasons of All-Star production and a landmark 2006 playoff run.

Cleveland acquired Michael Doleac for rights to Brendan Haywood, but the outgoing package produced a modestly stronger realized return.

Sacramento won the Mike Bibby–Jason Williams exchange because Bibby became the steadier playoff creator and a core piece of the best Kings team of the modern era.

Seattle received the rights to Predrag Drobnjak for the rights to Bobby Simmons; Seattle finished with a narrow realized-value edge.

Philadelphia purchased the Clippers 2001 second-round selection No. 36 for cash and chose Syracuse forward Damone Brown. He appeared in 17 Philadelphia games, logging 67 minutes during 2001-02, but never developed into a regular 76ers contributor. Los Angeles obtained financial consideration. Even Trade, C for each club; the earlier Sixers-win call relied on very little NBA output.

Charlotte acquired rights to Roberto Duenas from Chicago Bulls for 2001 second round pick (#44-Sean Lampley).

Detroit Pistons received Magic's agreement to delay their decision on a draft pick owed by the Suns from a previous trade, which allowed the Pistons to defer the first-round pick owed to them by the Grizzlies in the Otis Thorpe trade until 2002. Orlando Magic received first round pick (2005 #11-Fran Vazquez).

The 2001-06-02 exchange produced broadly comparable realized value: 2001 first-round pick (#23-Brandon Armstrong) for 2001 first-round pick (#22-Jeryl Sasser).

Philadelphia acquired Dikembe Mutombo and Roshown McLeod for Theo Ratliff, Toni Kukoc, Nazr Mohammed and Pepe Sanchez after Ratliff suffered a serious wrist injury.

Dallas received Juwan Howard; Calvin Booth; Obinna Ekezie from Washington Wizards and sent Christian Laettner; Loy Vaught; Etan Thomas; Hubert Davis; Courtney Alexander; $3M cash in return.

Detroit won the deal, acquiring Corliss Williamson, Tyrone Corbin, Kornel David, first round pick (2005 #11-Fran Vazquez) for Jerome Williams, Eric Montross.

New York Knicks received Mark Jackson; Muggsy Bogues. Toronto Raptors received Chris Childs; first round pick (lottery protected in 2001, unprotected in 2002) (2002 #20-Kareem Rush). New York received useful value, but the partner side finished with the better overall return.

Vancouver clearly won the completed-value comparison with New York Knicks, receiving Erick Strickland; 2001 first-round pick (#27-Jamaal Tinsley); 2001 second-round pick (#47-Antonis Fotsis) for Othella Harrington.

Golden State sent Vinny Del Negro to Phoenix on January 26, 2001, receiving Corie Blount, Rubén Garcés and Paul McPherson. Blount played 38 Warriors games in 918 minutes and McPherson added 22 games and 287 minutes; Garcés was waived in February without a Warriors game. Del Negro gave Phoenix 36 games and 526 minutes. Warriors Win narrowly, Golden State B and Phoenix C+.

Denver received Kevin Willis; Aleksandar Radojevic; Garth Joseph; 2001 or 2002 second-round pick (2001 #46-Ousmane Cisse) from Toronto Raptors, sending Keon Clark; Tracy Murray; Mamadou N'diaye in return.

Atlanta acquired guard Brevin Knight from Cleveland in January 2001 for Jim Jackson, Anthony Johnson and Larry Robinson. Knight provided backcourt assistance to the Hawks, while Cleveland collected veterans at multiple positions. The inherited Cavaliers Win awards Cleveland B+ and Atlanta C-.
