2022 NBA Trades

Houston and Oklahoma City swapped eight veterans before the 2022-23 season, but none of the incoming players appeared in a regular-season game for their new team. Oklahoma City generated two trade exceptions and moved roughly $10 million below the luxury-tax line. Houston received cash plus a 2026 second that became Philadelphia's No. 47 pick, Tyler Nickel, and later used that pick as one piece of the Kevin Durant package. Houston's durable draft asset gives the Rockets the stronger return.

Atlanta acquired Vit Krejčí from Oklahoma City in September 2022. The Thunder took Maurice Harkless, a 2029 second-round choice and revised protections on a previously owed 2025 second. Krejčí gave Atlanta a young wing prospect, while Oklahoma City gained asset flexibility. The inherited Thunder Win grades Oklahoma City B and Atlanta C+.

Detroit came out slightly ahead, acquiring Bojan Bogdanovic for Kelly Olynyk, Saben Lee, cash.

Cleveland exchanged Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton and 6 additional assets for Donovan Mitchell, with the two sides generating broadly comparable realized value.

Los Angeles Lakers finished with a modest realized-value edge in the 2022-08-25 transaction with Utah Jazz, receiving Patrick Beverley for Talen Horton-Tucker; Stanley Johnson.

Even Trade. Detroit earns B+ for Alec Burks's real veteran scoring and the added second-round compensation, with Nerlens Noel's shorter stay limiting the return. New York also gets B+ for clearing substantial contracts and acquiring international rights plus a protected future second. Brunson joined through a separate free-agent deal and isn't treated as a direct Pistons-trade player. Boston acquired Malcolm Brogdon from Indiana in July 2022 for Aaron Nesmith, Daniel Theis, three additional players and a 2023 first-round selection. Brogdon won the 2022-23 Sixth Man of the Year award for Boston, while Nesmith subsequently developed into a useful Indiana starter. Both clubs gained value; the inherited narrow Pacers edge credits Nesmith's longer-term fit.

Sacramento acquired Kevin Huerter from Atlanta in July 2022, sending Justin Holiday, Maurice Harkless and a protected first-round selection. Huerter provided perimeter scoring for the Kings' 2023 playoff team, while Atlanta gained veteran depth and a future asset later linked to No. 13 Derik Queen. The inherited slight Hawks edge grades Atlanta B- and Sacramento C+, although Huerter's actual Kings value was meaningful.

Phoenix acquired Jock Landale from Atlanta in July 2022 in exchange for cash considerations. Landale provided the Suns with reserve-center minutes during the 2022-23 season and playoff run, while the Hawks received financial compensation without an incoming player. Phoenix's inherited slight edge reflects that direct depth benefit.

Denver acquired rights to Ismael Kamagate from Portland Trail Blazers for 2024 second-round pick (more favorable of Hornets, Timberwolves picks) (#34-Tyler Kolek).

Detroit sent Jerami Grant and Ismael Kamagate's rights to Portland for Gabriele Procida's rights and three future picks. The Milwaukee 2025 first was immediately used in the transaction that brought Detroit Jalen Duren, who became a 2025-26 All-Star and All-NBA Third Team center. Portland received 221 regular-season games from Grant and later included him with Kris Murray in the Ja Morant trade. Detroit's higher-end realized return gives the Pistons the win.

Detroit won by turning a protected Milwaukee first-round pick into Jalen Duren's draft rights.

Minnesota acquired Rudy Gobert for five players, four first-round picks and a 2026 swap right; Gobert anchored consecutive Western Conference finals teams while Utah built a long-term portfolio including Walker Kessler, Keyonte George, Will Riley and unresolved future picks.

Washington receives C+ for legitimate, if shorter-lived, Will Barton and Monte Morris guard minutes. Caldwell-Pope’s previous Lakers title and the departing Nuggets players’ earlier Denver seasons are excluded from the respective receiving-team returns. The Nets acquired Royce O'Neale from Jazz in exchange for 2023 first-round pick (least favorable of 76ers, Nets, Rockets picks) (#28, Brice Sensabaugh).

Atlanta acquired Dejounte Murray and Jock Landale from San Antonio on June 30, 2022 for Danilo Gallinari, Charlotte's protected first, Atlanta's unprotected 2025 and 2027 firsts, and a 2026 first-round swap. Murray gave the Hawks two productive seasons but the Young-Murray pairing never advanced beyond the 2023 first round, and Landale was moved for cash days later. San Antonio turned the package into No. 14 Carter Bryant in 2025, No. 20 Jayden Quaintance through the exercised 2026 swap, retained the unprotected 2027 Atlanta first, and used the Charlotte asset in the 2025 De'Aaron Fox trade.

Dallas received Christian Wood from Houston Rockets and sent Sterling Brown; Marquese Chriss; Boban Marjanovic; Trey Burke; draft rights to Wendell Moore Jr. in return.

Houston moved down three spots in the 2022 draft, sending Wendell Moore Jr.'s rights to Minnesota for TyTy Washington Jr.'s rights plus Minnesota's 2025 and 2027 second-round picks. Neither player became a meaningful long-term rotation piece, but Houston retained more downstream asset value through the two extra seconds.

Memphis turned the rights to Walker Kessler and TyTy Washington Jr. into Jake LaRavia plus Minnesota's 2023 second-round pick. LaRavia gave the Grizzlies 117 regular-season games, while the second became No. 45 GG Jackson II, an All-Rookie selection who had reached 132 games for Memphis through 2025-26. Minnesota preserved value by rerouting Kessler and Washington into later trades, but neither played for the Timberwolves.

Philadelphia 76ers clearly won the completed-value comparison; Memphis received Danny Green; rights to David Roddy but surrendered De'Anthony Melton.

On the 2022 draft night the Hawks moved Ryan Rollins's No. 44 rights to Golden State for Tyrese Martin's No. 51 rights and cash. Martin played 16 Hawks games in 2022-23; Rollins played 12 Warriors games before foot surgery. Both players departed their receiving franchises, and the cash component supported Atlanta's slight value edge.

Charlotte acquired rights to Bryce McGowens from Minnesota Timberwolves for rights to Josh Minott; 2023 second round pick (#53-Jaylen Clark).

Charlotte received a package of future first- and second-round draft rights from New York in a June 2022 draft-rights exchange for the rights to Jalen Duren. The package later linked to selections including Nick Smith Jr., Mouhamed Gueye, Amari Bailey, Jaylen Clark and Cam Spencer. Duren's rights continued through additional moves rather than producing Knicks center minutes. The inherited Knicks Win grades New York B+ and Charlotte D+.

Cleveland exchanged rights to Sasha Vezenkov and cash considerations for 2022 second round pick (#49-Isaiah Mobley), with the realized return ultimately favorable to Kings.

Dallas received draft rights to Jaden Hardy from Sacramento Kings and sent 2024 second-round pick (#54-Anton Watson); 2028 second-round pick (pick not identified in source) in return.

Denver acquired rights to Peyton Watson; 2023 second-round pick (second most favorable of (a) Thunder, (b) Wizards, (c) more favorable of Heat, Mavericks picks) (#40-Maxwell Lewis); 2024 second-round pick (more favorable of Hornets, Timberwolves picks) (#34-Tyler Kolek) from Oklahoma City Thunder for JaMychal Green; first-round pick (at least 2 years after Nuggets send first-round pick to Magic in earlier trade; protected top 5 in 2027-29, else 2029 second-round pick) (outcome unknown).

Minnesota sent the No. 48 draft rights to Kendall Brown to Indiana for cash and a 2026 second-round pick. Brown played only 21 NBA games for the Pacers, while the future pick ultimately resolved at No. 59 in 2026, where Minnesota selected Trey Kaufman-Renn.

Indiana received about $1 million in cash for the 2022 No. 58 draft choice used on Hugo Besson. Milwaukee acquired his overseas rights but did not receive an established NBA contributor. Pacers Win, Indiana B- for a tangible financial return and Milwaukee C+ for speculative draft flexibility. Rights are not automatically Bucks playing minutes.

Lakers Win. Los Angeles earns A- because the purchased No. 35 pick became Max Christie, who logged real rotation minutes for the franchise. Orlando receives C+ for roughly $2.15 million and the future 2028 second-round right. Any later Christie seasons outside Los Angeles and the eventual identity of the Magic's conditional future selection are not invented as direct trade returns. San Antonio Spurs came out ahead in the 2022-06-23 trade with Memphis, which received rights to Kennedy Chandler for 2024 second-round pick (#48-Harrison Ingram); $1M cash.

New York acquired several protected future first- and second-round rights in the June 2022 draft, sending the rights to Ousmane Dieng to Oklahoma City. The Knicks accumulated conditional selections tied to Denver, Detroit and Washington, while the Thunder selected a specific young forward. The inherited Knicks Win grades New York A and Oklahoma City B-.

The Nets acquired Ben Simmons; Seth Curry; Andre Drummond; 2023 first-round pick (#28, Brice Sensabaugh); 2027 first-round pick (top-eight protected in 2027 and 2028, otherwise converts to a 2028 second-round pick and cash) from 76ers in exchange for James Harden; Paul Millsap.

Orlando acquired Bol Bol, P.J. Dozier and cash from Boston in February 2022, along with a conditional 2028 second-round asset. The Celtics received a conditional 2023 second that never conveyed. Bol eventually supplied Orlando with meaningful center and forward minutes after recovery, giving the Magic a clear edge over Boston's limited direct compensation.

Celtics Win. Boston earns B+ for reacquiring Daniel Theis and obtaining meaningful frontcourt depth during its 2022 Finals run. Houston receives C+ for Dennis Schröder's guard minutes, Bruno Fernando's developmental value and the flexibility of the incoming contracts; Enes Freedom was released without becoming a Rockets regular. Boston acquired Derrick White and a 2028 swap adjustment for Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, the 2022 first-round pick used on Blake Wesley and reciprocal 2028 swap rights. White became an All-Defensive guard, a championship starter and a durable two-way connector, while San Antonio converted a non-core veteran into multiple assets and later trade value.

Charlotte acquired Montrezl Harrell from Washington Wizards for Vernon Carey Jr.; Ish Smith; second round pick (protected top 45 in 2023, else Celtics 2024 second round pick) (2023 #57-Trayce Jackson-Davis).

Detroit acquired Marvin Bagley III from Sacramento in the February 2022 four-team trade. The Kings received Donte DiVincenzo, Josh Jackson, Trey Lyles and David Michineau rights. Milwaukee acquired Serge Ibaka, second-round rights and cash. The Clippers obtained Rodney Hood, Semi Ojeleye and Vanja Marinković rights. The inherited slight Kings edge grades Sacramento B, Milwaukee B-, Detroit C and the Clippers C.

Indiana earned a modest hindsight edge over Phoenix Suns, with Jalen Smith providing the better realized return.

Dallas traded Kristaps Porziņģis and a 2022 second-round pick to Washington in February 2022 for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans. Dinwiddie supplied useful Mavericks guard scoring during their 2022 conference-finals run, while Porziņģis produced a strong 2022-23 Wizards season. Both teams obtained real production, but the inherited Wizards Win prioritizes the higher-end incoming frontcourt talent.

On February 10, 2022, Toronto acquired Thaddeus Young; Drew Eubanks; 2022 second round pick (more favorable of Bulls, Pistons picks) (#33-Christian Koloko) from San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Goran Dragic; draft picks (first round pick protected top 14 in 2022, top 13 in 2023, else 2023 second round pick, 2026 second round pick) (2022 #20-Malaki Branham).

Slight Heat Edge. Miami receives B+ for securing draft-year flexibility that allowed use of its 2023 No. 18 pick on Jaime Jaquez Jr., a genuine Heat contributor. Oklahoma City earns B for the modified first-round obligation eventually associated with 2025 No. 15 Thomas Sorber. Indiana acquired Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson for Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb and a protected second-round pick, creating two successful but differently scaled franchise resets.

New Orleans acquired CJ McCollum, Larry Nance Jr. and Tony Snell for Josh Hart, younger contracts and protected draft capital, buying immediate offensive stability while Portland began a broader reset.

Cleveland acquired Caris LeVert and 2022 second round pick (#56-Luke Travers) for Ricky Rubio, 2022 second round pick (#31-Andrew Nembhard) and 2 additional assets, but the outgoing package produced a modestly stronger realized return.

Clippers Win: The trade has aged as one of the clearest talent-for-flexibility swaps of the early 2020s. Portland can defend the financial logic, especially the repeater-tax reset, but financial logic is not the same as equal trade value. Los Angeles got multiple seasons of high-end scoring, useful Covington minutes and a still-movable Powell contract. That is a decisive basketball return.

On January 19, 2022, Boston acquired Bol Bol and P.J. Dozier from Denver; the Nuggets obtained shooting guard Bryn Forbes from San Antonio, while the Spurs received Juancho Hernangómez, cash from Boston, plus a protected 2028 Denver second and cash from Denver. The official NBA transaction and Spurs releases confirm every team's directed assets. The inherited Even Trade assigns B to all three franchises.

New York acquired Cam Reddish, Solomon Hill and Brooklyn's 2025 second-round pick for Kevin Knox II and Charlotte's protected first-round obligation. Reddish played 35 games for the Knicks and later became part of the Josh Hart package, while the 2025 second was later included in the Mikal Bridges trade. Atlanta received only 17 games from Knox, and the protected first never conveyed, converting into Charlotte's 2026 No. 45 second and a future 2027 second.

Oklahoma City Thunder Win by a limited draft-flexibility edge. The Thunder receive B- for the future 2028 second-round right and an incoming Miye Oni contract that did not become a lasting Oklahoma City NBA rotation role. Utah earns C+ for cash and roster flexibility. The future pick isn't assigned an unverified draftee, and Oni's earlier Jazz games remain Utah history.
