St. Louis Exchanged Walker for a Fourth-Round Pick
The Hawks traded Horace Walker's rights to the expansion Chicago Packers on June 24, 1961 for a 1962 fourth-round draft pick. The league ledger, St. Louis team ledger and Marty Blake executive record agree on the structure and identify Chico Vaughn as the player later selected with the pick.
Walker Started Immediately for Chicago
Walker played 65 games in the Packers' first season, averaging 20.5 minutes, 6.7 points and 7.2 rebounds. It was his only NBA season. Chicago therefore received a useful inaugural-year frontcourt contributor, but no value beyond that one campaign.
Vaughn Became a Multi-Year Hawks Guard
Vaughn joined St. Louis in 1962-63 and played 77 games as a rookie, averaging 10.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists. He remained with the Hawks for five NBA seasons before continuing his career in the ABA, giving St. Louis substantially more tenure than Walker gave Chicago.
Both Sides Benefited, but the Pick Lasted Longer
The Packers obtained a real contributor for an expansion roster, so this was not a failed acquisition. St. Louis converted rights to a player who never suited up for the Hawks into a guard who contributed across several seasons. Vaughn's longer service creates a modest Hawks advantage.
Final Verdict
Slight Hawks Edge — St. Louis B-, Chicago C+. Horace Walker helped the expansion Packers for one season, while the fourth-round pick became multi-year Hawks guard Chico Vaughn.
