Charlotte Swapped Two Reserves for Center Nazr Mohammed

On December 14, 2007, the Charlotte Bobcats obtained veteran center Nazr Mohammed from Detroit. The Pistons received two frontcourt reserves, Primož Brezec and Walter Herrmann. Mohammed had contributed to San Antonio’s 2005 championship earlier in his career and remained a capable rebounder, but his minutes in Detroit had decreased. Charlotte wanted a larger regular center to reinforce Emeka Okafor and its young frontcourt. Detroit had established interior options and was willing to try two role players instead. The official transaction logs for both teams record a direct two-for-one trade, without additional draft rights. Charlotte was not receiving Mohammed’s earlier championship performances, but it did gain a veteran who could immediately start games.

Mohammed Started Twenty-Nine Bobcats Games in His First Season

After the trade, Mohammed appeared in 61 Charlotte games during 2007-08, started 29 and averaged 9.3 points with 6.9 rebounds in 23.3 minutes. Those totals were a substantial increase from his 21-game Detroit reserve role earlier that season. He also stayed in Charlotte for subsequent seasons, making this more than a temporary rental. The Bobcats C+ grade recognizes regular frontcourt production from a club still searching for a stable NBA rotation. Mohammed was not an All-Star during his Charlotte stint, and his previous playing time on stronger teams should not be credited twice, but getting a 29-game starter for two limited reserves was an identifiable basketball return.

Detroit Got Short Bench Trials and Moved Brezec Again

Brezec appeared in 17 Detroit games after arriving from Charlotte, scoring 1.6 points per appearance and averaging 5.8 minutes. He was moved on to Toronto for Juan Dixon and cash in February 2008, a separate transaction whose return belongs to Detroit’s later roster management. Herrmann played 28 Detroit games in 2007-08, averaging 3.0 points in 7.1 minutes; he remained with the club for a further season. Those were legitimate reserve contributions but did not match Mohammed’s starting responsibilities in Charlotte. The Pistons C+ grade equals Charlotte in the inherited data, so the Even Trade decision should be understood as a value judgment that considers cap and depth as well as basketball minutes. It does not mean the two teams received identical player production.

Final Verdict

Even Trade according to the inherited C+/C+ grades. Charlotte obtained Nazr Mohammed, who made 29 starts with 9.3 points and 6.9 rebounds after arrival in 2007-08. Detroit got Primož Brezec and Walter Herrmann, with Brezec then traded again in February. Charlotte clearly received more first-season starting-center production.
