Trade Analysis

A Financial Reset for Golden State, a Veteran Starter for Utah

Golden State traded Derek Fisher to Utah on July 12, 2006 for Devin Brown, Keith McLeod and Andre Owens. The Jazz were pairing a veteran with Deron Williams in a backcourt supporting Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur. Fisher had extensive playoff experience and could lead the second unit or play beside Williams. The Warriors wanted relief from Fisher's remaining contract and took back three guards as less expensive roster options. The four-player exchange therefore combined a meaningful basketball acquisition for Utah with a different type of value for Golden State, beyond a simple comparison of the numbers of players moved.

Fisher Played Every Game on a Western Conference Finals Team

Fisher suited up for all 82 Utah regular-season games in 2006-07 and started 61, averaging 10.1 points and 3.3 assists in 27.9 minutes. He supplied reliable guard minutes in a 51-win season when Williams was establishing himself as the team's primary ball handler. Utah reached the Western Conference finals after beating Golden State in the second round, and Fisher appeared in 16 postseason games. His stay lasted only one season before a return to Los Angeles. Still, the Jazz received a documented season of starting-caliber play on a deep postseason run, not merely a veteran name on the roster.

McLeod Offered Minutes and Became Part of the Indiana Transaction

Of the three acquired guards, Keith McLeod was the only one who played a Golden State regular-season game. He appeared in 26 games, logging 379 minutes with averages of 5.3 points and 1.7 assists. The Warriors waived Devin Brown on October 3 and Andre Owens on October 26 before either played for the team. McLeod later moved with Ike Diogu, Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy to Indiana in January 2007. Golden State obtained Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, Sarunas Jasikevicius and Josh Powell in that separate four-for-four transaction. McLeod was one ingredient in that larger deal, rather than the source of all four returning players.

Utah's Direct Return Was Larger, Though Both Teams Gained

A championship-tested guard who started 61 games and contributed in the postseason gave Utah the clearest on-court benefit. Golden State did not come away empty: it reduced a sizeable salary obligation, received reserve minutes from McLeod and later included him in the asset package that reshaped its playoff roster. Those advantages help explain the Warriors' favorable grade. But the other two guards never joined their regular-season rotation, and the subsequent Indiana trade also required three separate Warriors assets. Fisher's direct contribution to Utah remains more easily attributable to the July 2006 exchange, warranting a narrow rather than overwhelming Jazz advantage.

Final Verdict

Slight Jazz Edge. Utah earns A- for Fisher's 82 games, 61 starts and real 2007 conference-finals contribution. Golden State receives B+ for contractual flexibility, 26 McLeod appearances and his limited role in the separate Indiana transaction. Golden State cannot claim all of that later package as value from Fisher alone.
