Indiana and Minnesota Timberwolves produced a stronger realized return for Wolves in the 1992-09-08 exchange.
Indiana sent Chuck Person and Micheal Williams to Minnesota for Pooh Richardson and Sam Mitchell before the 1992-93 season. The Pacers moved on from a long-time scoring forward and a productive point guard in exchange for a younger lead guard plus a versatile veteran forward. Minnesota paid for established offense and backcourt stability as it tried to accelerate a young roster.
Williams became the strongest long-term piece from the trade. He took over a major ball-handling role for the Timberwolves and gave them several productive seasons before injuries eventually reduced his availability. Person also added immediate scoring and veteran shooting. The Wolves therefore received two players who could step into meaningful roles instead of a single centerpiece surrounded by filler. This was a two-player package on each side rather than a simple exchange of Person for Richardson. Minnesota received Chuck Person's established scoring and Micheal Williams' ability to run an offense; Indiana obtained point guard Pooh Richardson and versatile forward Sam Mitchell. All four have to be attached to the actual receiving clubs when comparing results, rather than crediting Indiana for Mitchell's later career in Minnesota. Williams' strong Timberwolves period became the highest-value direct branch, while Person also played a genuine role. Richardson and Mitchell gave the Pacers reasonable depth but did not match that peak. The A- and B grades recognize Minnesota's superior realized individual return without treating Indiana's two-player package as wasted.
The Pacers did not get empty value. Richardson handled point-guard minutes and Mitchell supplied veteran forward play, giving Indiana two rotation pieces from the exchange. The difference is that neither player became as valuable to Indiana as Williams became to Minnesota. The trade helped the Pacers rebalance the roster, but the highest realized individual value still landed with the Timberwolves.
Wolves Win — Minnesota A-, Indiana B. The Pacers received useful seasons from Pooh Richardson and Sam Mitchell, so this was not a failed return. Minnesota still wins because Micheal Williams became the best player produced by the deal for either side, while Chuck Person added immediate scoring on top of that. Indiana gained depth and roster flexibility; the Timberwolves gained the stronger top-end result.
