The Package Is Future Considerations, Not Verified Cash
The Lakers, Buffalo Braves, league transaction log, Bill Sharman executive ledger and Norm Sonju executive ledger all record the September 7, 1977 transaction the same way: Buffalo sent Ernie DiGregorio to Los Angeles for future considerations.
The legacy archive entry had converted that phrase into “undisclosed considerations (cash?),” but none of the authoritative ledgers reviewed for this review identifies cash. That distinction matters. “Future considerations” can later become cash, a draft asset, player rights or another agreed return, but the cited record does not establish which outcome occurred here.
This review therefore changes the asset type from cash to future consideration and labels the downstream outcome unresolved. The review does not invent a payment amount or a later asset.
DiGregorio Gave the Lakers 25 Games
Los Angeles received a recognizable former Rookie of the Year, but the actual Lakers tenure was brief. DiGregorio appeared in 25 regular-season games in 1977-78 and averaged 13.3 minutes, 3.9 points, 2.8 assists and 0.9 rebounds.
The team did get usable reserve minutes, especially at point guard, but his role was limited. Basketball-Reference lists 332 total Lakers minutes, 98 points and 71 assists. That is real production, though not enough to create a large transaction win by itself.
The Lakers Waived Him in January
Los Angeles waived DiGregorio on January 30, 1978. Boston signed him as a free agent on February 1, and he played 27 games for the Celtics to finish the season.
Because the Lakers waived him rather than trading him, there was no downstream Lakers asset return to attach to this transaction. Their realized value from the deal is therefore almost entirely those 25 games of reserve production.
Buffalo's Return Is Still Unresolved
Buffalo's side is harder to score because the original consideration was deferred and the reviewed transaction ledgers do not identify the eventual fulfillment. The Braves' 1977-78 ledger continues to label the September 7 return simply as future considerations even while later entries identify concrete picks, cash sales and player transactions in detail.
That is a reason to preserve uncertainty rather than assume Buffalo received nothing. A missing downstream identification is not proof that the consideration had zero value.
At the same time, TradeVerdicts grades realized, traceable outcomes. Without a verified cash amount, pick or player connection, Buffalo cannot receive full credit for an asset that remains unspecified in the source record.
Final Verdict
Lakers Edge, C-/D+. Los Angeles receives a C- because it obtained 25 games and modest reserve production before waiving DiGregorio in January. Buffalo receives a D+ on documented realized value because the future consideration is real but unresolved in the cited ledgers. The grade gap is intentionally small, and confidence is medium rather than high because Buffalo's eventual return could not be identified. This review's main repair is factual: future considerations should not be rewritten as confirmed or probable cash without source support.
