The decisive gap comes from the superior player, draft asset or downstream value retained by the counterpart after the transaction matured. The evaluation focuses on completed NBA value and avoids inflating a standard transaction simply because the list of assets was long. Memphis may have pursued a coherent short-term objective, but the realized return was not sufficient to offset what left the franchise.
