Memphis acquired the draft rights to Ivan Rabb, the No. 35 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, from Orlando for a future second-round pick. Rabb was a 20-year-old California forward who had averaged 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds as a college sophomore. The Grizzlies were buying a young frontcourt prospect at a familiar second-round price, and he did reach the NBA rotation during both seasons he spent with the franchise.
Rabb played 85 regular-season games for Memphis across 2017-18 and 2018-19, starting 18. He averaged 5.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in 14.6 minutes while shooting 55.5 percent from the field. Those numbers gave the Grizzlies some real return from the No. 35 rights, but he never established himself as a long-term starter and his NBA career ended after those two Memphis seasons. The acquisition produced usable depth rather than a durable core piece.
The future second conveyed in 2019 at No. 46, where Orlando selected Talen Horton-Tucker. The Magic did not keep him. On draft night they traded his rights to the Lakers for a 2020 second-round pick and cash considerations, reported at $2.2 million. Horton-Tucker later became a rotation player in Los Angeles, but Orlando's realized value from the original Memphis asset was the cash plus another future second, not Horton-Tucker's later NBA production.
Memphis received two seasons of reserve minutes from Rabb, while Orlando turned the outgoing No. 35 rights into a future second and then converted that pick again for cash plus another second. Neither path produced a franchise-changing player for the team that held the asset, which keeps the trade in modest territory. The canonical B for Orlando and C for Memphis reflects the Magic's better asset preservation against Rabb's limited two-year NBA run rather than crediting Orlando with Horton-Tucker's Lakers career.
