San Diego sent star receiver John Jefferson to Green Bay in 1981 and received Aundra Thompson, a favorable first-round positioning arrangement, additional first- and second-round selections and another future second. The Chargers repeatedly reused those assets in later transactions, including the package that brought Wes Chandler. Jefferson remained productive for Green Bay, but San Diego created the broader and more durable roster-building return.

The Jets sent Abdul Salaam and Kenny Neil to San Diego on February 13, 1984 for a second-round pick, No. 39 overall. New York selected tight end Glenn Dennison, who started nine games and caught 16 passes for 141 yards in 1984 but had little later NFL production. San Diego received short-term defensive-line depth and later moved Neil for another pick. Neither side created a lasting advantage.
