Carolina traded up from No. 43 to No. 19 in the 2008 draft for right tackle Jeff Otah, sending Philadelphia picks 43, 109 and a 2009 first-rounder. Otah was excellent when healthy and started immediately, but repeated knee problems limited him to 29 career games. Philadelphia gained valuable draft flexibility and later used the future first as part of the Jason Peters acquisition, giving the Eagles the better return.

Philadelphia acquired Jason Peters from Buffalo for a 2009 first, a 2009 fourth and a conditional 2010 sixth that ultimately conveyed. Peters became one of the defining left tackles of his generation and made seven Pro Bowls as an Eagle. Buffalo used the first-rounder on Eric Wood, a nine-year starting center and Pro Bowler, giving the Bills substantial value even though Philadelphia landed the transcendent player.
