Buffalo sent quarterback M.C. Reynolds and defensive tackle Chuck McMurtry to Oakland for Wayne Crow and the Raiders' 1963 second-round pick. Buffalo used the ninth overall AFL selection on Jim Dunaway, who became a four-time AFL All-Star and key member of the Bills' 1964 and 1965 championship defenses. Oakland received little lasting value from Reynolds and McMurtry, giving Buffalo a large advantage.
Buffalo acquired Miami's 1973 first-round pick, No. 26, and linebacker Dale Farley for wide receiver Marlin Briscoe and defensive lineman Jim Dunaway. The Bills used No. 26 on Hall of Fame guard Joe DeLamielleure. Miami still received meaningful championship-era value from Briscoe, but Buffalo secured the best long-term player and a franchise cornerstone from the exchange.
