Miami sent the third overall pick in the 1970 draft to Cleveland for All-Pro receiver Paul Warfield. The Browns selected quarterback Mike Phipps, who had uneven results and never became their long-term answer. Warfield became a centerpiece of Miami’s three straight Super Bowl teams, winning two championships and stretching defenses for the perfect 1972 club. Few trades show a larger gap between immediate star value and draft conversion.
Miami completed a long-running Bo Rather compensation chain on draft day in 1977, sending Chicago the fourth-round pick at No. 110 and returning the fifth-round pick at No. 126 for Chicago's third-rounder at No. 71. Miami used No. 71 on Mike Watson, who never appeared in an NFL regular-season game, while Chicago immediately used No. 110 in the Mike Phipps trade.
