Kansas City's trade up for Patrick Mahomes became one of the most important draft moves in NFL history. The Chiefs paid a first-round pick, a third-round pick, and a future first to move up for their quarterback. Buffalo received real assets, but Kansas City acquired the player who launched a dynasty. Buffalo received useful assets, but Kansas City acquired the defining quarterback of the era.
Baltimore moved from No. 22 to No. 25 in 2018, sending Tennessee a sixth-rounder and receiving a fourth-round pick. The Ravens selected Hayden Hurst at No. 25 and later used the acquired fourth-round asset in the package that brought back the 32nd pick for Lamar Jackson. Hurst himself was eventually traded to Atlanta for valuable draft capital. Tennessee selected Rashaan Evans, a four-year starting linebacker, producing a solid but less expansive return.
Buffalo moved from No. 22 to No. 16 for linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, sending Baltimore a third-round pick and swapping a fifth-rounder into the deal. Edmunds became an immediate starter, made two Pro Bowls and spent five seasons directing the Bills’ defense. Baltimore’s return became even larger through subsequent moves, helping create the picks used on Hayden Hurst, Mark Andrews, Kenny Young and other players while also feeding the later Lamar Jackson trade package.
