Minnesota collected a massive pick package that produced Ron Yary, Ed White, Bob Grim, and other value, then later reacquired Tarkenton. New York received the best immediate player, but the Vikings converted the return into more lasting franchise value.

Minnesota traded Hall of Fame tackle Ron Yary to the Rams late in the 1982 preseason for a 1983 tenth-round pick. The name makes the deal look larger than the actual Rams return: Yary appeared in only eight games for Los Angeles and did not start. Minnesota used No. 255 on defensive back Melvin Brown, who did not produce meaningful NFL value. The Rams win, but only narrowly and at a low grade.
