Chronological Timeline
Trade 1 of 3
New York traded tackle Francis Peay to Green Bay in April 1968 for linebacker Tommy Crutcher and tackle Steve Wright. Crutcher immediately became a full-time Giants starter, starting all 28 games in 1968-69, while Wright started 11 of 12 Giants games across those two seasons. The Giants received two useful short-term starters, but both were gone from New York by 1970.
Trade 2 of 3
The Los Angeles Rams acquired veteran linebacker Tommy Joe Crutcher from the New York Giants on May 30, 1970 for New York's 1971 fifth-round pick and 1972 third-round pick. Crutcher spent the 1970 season on Los Angeles' taxi/inactive list and never produced regular-season value for the Rams. The Giants retained two future assets, making New York the stronger side in hindsight.
Trade 3 of 3
Green Bay acquired veteran linebacker Tommy Crutcher from Los Angeles for a future fourth-round pick. Crutcher returned to the Packers for a second stint and provided useful short-term depth, but the Rams turned a player nearing the end of his career into a defined draft asset. Los Angeles later used the 1973 No. 99 selection on Terry Nelson, preserving longer-term roster value from the deal.
