Chronological Timeline
Trade 1 of 2
Pittsburgh sent the 1996 sixth-round pick at No. 192 to San Diego for the Chargers’ 1997 fifth-round choice at No. 146. San Diego selected Bryan Stoltenberg, who appeared in nine games without a start for the Chargers. Pittsburgh later included the fifth-rounder in a separate package that returned a 1998 third-round choice, giving the Steelers the better asset progression.
Trade 2 of 2
Kansas City acquired Brentson Buckner from Pittsburgh for a 1997 seventh-round choice, but the move produced no regular-season value for the Chiefs. Buckner was released on August 24 and claimed by Cincinnati on August 25, where he played 14 games that season. The Chiefs surrendered draft capital for a player they did not carry into the season.
