Chronological Timeline
Trade 1 of 2
San Diego moved up from the second round to No. 22 in 1983, sending San Francisco both No. 49 and No. 36. The Chargers selected cornerback Gill Byrd, who became a franchise standout and intercepted 42 passes in his career. That is an excellent result, but the 49ers received Roger Craig plus another second-round asset that they immediately used in the Wendell Tyler deal.
Trade 2 of 2
The Rams sent Wendell Tyler, veteran lineman Cody Jones and the No. 59 pick to San Francisco for picks No. 36 and No. 87 in the 1983 draft. Los Angeles used No. 36 on linebacker Mike Wilcher, who became a long-term starter and pass rusher for the Rams. Chuck Nelson was the other selection, giving Los Angeles substantial return from the package.
