compensation related to TE Jim McFarland
St. Louis acquired Marlin Briscoe and Hubie Ginn from Miami, while the Dolphins received Donny Anderson plus separate compensation tied to tight end Jim McFarland. The principal pieces produced little for their new clubs: Briscoe was moved again before the season, and Anderson retired in August without playing for Miami. The limited realized value makes this effectively even.
St. Louis acquired linebacker Rodrigo Barnes from Miami for a 1976 twelfth-round choice. Barnes did not become a lasting Cardinals contributor and later appeared in five games for Oakland that season. With little realized value on the St. Louis side, the deal offered only a short-lived attempt to add veteran defensive help.
Miami moved up from No. 70 to No. 56 in the 1987 draft, sending St. Louis the third-round choice plus No. 126. The Dolphins selected receiver and returner Scott Schwedes, who played 46 NFL games and contributed on offense and special teams. The Cardinals used their picks on Colin Scotts and John Bruno, who combined for little sustained NFL value. Miami obtained the only meaningful multi-year contributor.
Miami sent running back Sammie Smith to Phoenix in September 1991 and received the Cardinals' 1992 first-round selection. That pick became No. 7 overall, which Miami used on cornerback Troy Vincent. Vincent immediately became a full-time starter and spent four seasons with the Dolphins, turning the exchange into a major upgrade after Smith's difficult Miami tenure.
1994 3rd round pick (89th overall, Eric England), 1994 4th round pick (115th overall, Terry Irving) and 1994 4th round pick (121st overall subsequently traded, John Burke)
Miami Dolphins received
1994 2nd round pick (65th overall, Tim Ruddy)
Miami packaged picks No. 89, No. 115 and No. 121 to Arizona for the No. 65 selection in the 1994 draft and used it on center Tim Ruddy. Ruddy played 156 NFL games, started 140 and spent his entire career with Miami, giving the Dolphins long-term stability in the middle of the offensive line.
Miami traded the 62nd pick in 2019 and a 2020 fifth-rounder to Arizona for quarterback Josh Rosen, betting that the previous year’s No. 10 pick could rebound in a new setting. Rosen started only three games for the Dolphins, threw one touchdown against five interceptions and was waived before the 2020 season. Arizona used No. 62 on Andy Isabella and later recycled the fifth-round asset in the Kenyan Drake trade.
Arizona acquired Kenyan Drake for a conditional 2020 pick that became a fifth-rounder. Drake immediately erupted for 643 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in eight games, then added 955 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2020. Miami later used the acquired pick in the Matt Breida trade, but Drake's two-season production gave Arizona the stronger direct football payoff.
