Carolina Panthers received
1995 1st round pick (5th overall, Kerry Collins)
1995 2nd round pick (36th overall, Shawn King)
Cincinnati Bengals received
1995 1st round pick (1st overall, Ki-Jana Carter)
Carolina used the first major draft decision in franchise history to turn the No. 1 pick into two premium selections. Moving down to No. 5 still produced quarterback Kerry Collins, while the extra second-rounder became Shawn King. Cincinnati’s move for Ki-Jana Carter was understandable on talent, but Carter’s devastating rookie knee injury and limited NFL career left Carolina with far more realized value from the exchange.
2002 3rd round pick (73rd overall, Will Witherspoon)
2002 5th round pick (145th overall, Kyle Johnson)
Cincinnati Bengals received
2002 3rd round pick (67th overall, Matt Schobel)
Carolina moved down six spots in the third round of the 2002 draft, sending No. 67 to Cincinnati for Nos. 73 and 145. The Bengals selected tight end Matt Schobel, who became a useful NFL player. Carolina used No. 73 on linebacker Will Witherspoon, who developed into a long-term starter and one of the best players from this portion of the draft. That high-end hit gives the Panthers the advantage.
