New England traded the 50th overall pick to Carolina during the 2003 draft and moved up to No. 45, sending pick No. 120 with it. Carolina selected center Bruce Nelson at 50 and later used No. 120 in another move, while the Patriots chose wide receiver Bethel Johnson at 45 and eventually reacquired 120 to draft Asante Samuel. The Patriots' broader draft maneuvering produced the stronger value.
Carolina wanted Appalachian State star Armanti Edwards badly enough to surrender its 2011 second-round pick for New England's No. 89 selection in 2010. Edwards never found a stable offensive role and finished his Panthers tenure primarily as a returner with minimal scrimmage production. New England used the future pick at No. 33 on Ras-I Dowling, whose career was also derailed by injuries. Both selections disappointed, but New England still gained more draft value and deserves the slight edge.
Carolina moved down only eight spots, sending Kony Ealy and pick No. 72 to New England for pick No. 64. The Panthers used No. 64 on Taylor Moton, who became a durable long-term starting right tackle. New England released Ealy before the 2017 season and later traded pick No. 72. The Panthers turned a modest move up the board into one of the franchise's most dependable offensive linemen.
Carolina acquired cornerback Stephon Gilmore from New England for a 2023 sixth-round pick. Gilmore gave the Panthers eight games, two interceptions and a Pro Bowl selection before leaving after the season. New England eventually used the pick on receiver Kayshon Boutte, who developed into a productive asset and later carried additional trade value. Carolina received a quality rental, but the Patriots captured the better long-term return.
Carolina paid a 2022 fourth-round pick and a 2023 third-rounder to move up for Matt Corral at No. 94. Corral missed his rookie season with a foot injury and was waived before ever appearing in a regular-season game for the Panthers. New England used the fourth-rounder on Bailey Zappe and the future third on Marte Mapu, producing substantially more usable NFL value from the exchange.
Carolina moved from pick No. 85 to No. 77 and selected edge defender Princely Umanmielen, sending New England No. 85 and No. 146. Umanmielen appeared in 16 games with 23 tackles and 1.5 sacks as a rookie. New England later moved No. 85 in another deal and used No. 146 on Bradyn Swinson, who had a limited rookie role. Neither side has created enough separation for a winner.
