Rufus Mayes
Cincinnati acquired tackle Rufus Mayes from Chicago on January 21, 1970 for defensive linemen Bill Staley and Harry Gunner. Mayes became a long-term Bengals starter, playing 110 games with 98 starts over nine seasons. Chicago still received useful value: Staley started and produced as a pass rusher, while Gunner appeared in all 14 games in 1970. The Bears’ return was legitimate, but Mayes’ durability gives Cincinnati the clear long-term edge.
Chicago acquired defensive end Royce Berry from Cincinnati in May 1976 and sent a future fifth-round choice that eventually became No. 131 Rob Hertel. Berry gave the Bears 12 appearances and two starts that season. Hertel appeared in only three games for Cincinnati in 1978, so Chicago receives a narrow edge on the direct transaction.
Chicago acquired tight end Mike Cobb from Cincinnati in 1978. Cobb remained with the Bears through 1981, appearing in 49 games and making 19 starts while contributing as a receiver and blocker. Cincinnati received the 1979 fourth-round selection used on Vaughn Lusby, who played all 16 games as a rookie but remained with the Bengals for only that season.
