Los Angeles Rams received
Mike Wilson
On 1971-07-31, Cincinnati Bengals received 1972 undisclosed pick (selection not identified), while Los Angeles Rams received Mike Wilson. The hindsight verdict is Los Angeles/Cleveland/St. Louis Rams Win, with Cincinnati Bengals graded C+ and Los Angeles Rams graded B. The evaluation follows the documented consideration and the football value that can be traced from it, while treating conditional terms and later draft outcomes as context rather than as assets exchanged directly on trade day.
undisclosed conditional pick (if Christensen makes Rams roster) (not exercised)
Los Angeles Rams received
Jeff Christensen
Cincinnati Bengals received undisclosed conditional pick (if Christensen makes Rams roster) (not exercised) from Los Angeles Rams in the 1984-07-25 trade. Los Angeles acquired Jeff Christensen on a roster condition. Los Angeles Rams's return was Jeff Christensen. Because Christensen did not make the required roster threshold, Cincinnati's conditional draft compensation was not exercised. Those realized outcomes, rather than the labels on the assets alone, drive the hindsight grade.
2004 1st round pick (24th overall, Steven Jackson)
The Rams moved from No. 26 to No. 24 in the 2004 draft and selected Steven Jackson, sending Cincinnati the 26th pick and No. 123. Jackson became the Rams' franchise rushing leader with 10,138 yards during his nine seasons with the club. Cincinnati selected Chris Perry and Stacy Andrews, who provided some value but never approached Jackson's impact. A small move up produced a franchise cornerstone for St. Louis.
Cincinnati moved quarterback Dave Ragone to St. Louis for a conditional 2007 late-round selection, but the condition required Ragone to make the Rams' roster and the pick never conveyed. With no draft choice transferred and no regular-season contribution from Ragone, the exchange is best treated as a roster-management move rather than a meaningful talent transfer.
2008 seventh-round pick, No. 217 overall (later traded to Green Bay; Brett Swain selected)
Cincinnati acquired quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick from St. Louis on September 1, 2007 for a conditional future draft choice that became the 2008 seventh-round pick at No. 217 overall. Fitzpatrick later started 12 games for Cincinnati in 2008.
Cincinnati acquired running back and fullback Brian Leonard from St. Louis for defensive tackle Orien Harris. Leonard became a four-year Bengals role player, contributing on third downs and catching 72 passes while averaging 4.3 yards on 53 carries through his first three Cincinnati seasons. Harris lasted only briefly with the Rams and was traded to Detroit that July. Cincinnati received the clearly more durable contribution.
