Dallas sent defensive lineman Tody Smith and receiver Billy Parks to Houston in 1973 for the Oilers' 1974 first- and third-round picks. Houston's collapse made the first-rounder No. 1 overall, which Dallas used on Ed “Too Tall” Jones; the third-rounder became quarterback Danny White at No. 53. The Cowboys landed two franchise fixtures from one deal, while the Oilers received only short-term veteran production.
Dallas Cowboys received conditional future draft pick (not exercised). Dallas' return was a conditional future draft pick. The condition was not exercised, so Dallas realized no selection from the consideration. That realized return supports a D- grade. Houston Oilers received Ralph Coleman, and the overall verdict is Even Trade.
Dallas Cowboys received 1975 fourth round pick (#90-Pat Donovan), while Houston Oilers received Mike Montgomery. Dallas sent Mike Montgomery to Houston for the fourth-round choice that became No. 90 Pat Donovan. The supported history provides enough detail to judge the exchange without overstating uncertain downstream information. Dallas Cowboys earns a A- grade, and the overall verdict is Dallas Cowboys Win.
Dallas acquired Mike Renfro, a 1984 second-round selection and Houston's 1985 fifth-rounder for Butch Johnson and Dallas's own 1984 second-round pick. Renfro became a productive Cowboys receiver, and the future fifth was used on Herschel Walker. Houston's return did not approach that combined value, making the existing Oilers-win reading backwards in hindsight.
Dallas acquired running back Alonzo Highsmith from the Houston Oilers on September 3, 1990, surrendering a 1991 second-round pick and a 1992 fifth-rounder. Houston used the second-round choice on Darryll Lewis and the later pick on Tim Roberts. Highsmith's Dallas stay was brief and injury-limited, while Lewis became a long-term starting defensive back and Pro Bowler, making Houston the clear winner.
Dallas received Adam Jones and, after his 2008 suspension triggered a trade clause, also received Tennessee's 2009 fifth-round pick at No. 166, later used on Michael Hamlin. Jones did contribute for the Cowboys, but the tenure was short and turbulent. The additional pick keeps Dallas from grading poorly, yet the total return remains only a C+.
