Las Vegas Raiders received
1974 third round pick (#75-Mark van Eeghen)
Pittsburgh Steelers received
Tom Keating
Oakland sent veteran defensive tackle Tom Keating to Pittsburgh on July 23, 1973, for the Steelers’ 1974 third-round pick, No. 75 overall. Pittsburgh got 12 games and four starts from Keating before he left after one season. Oakland used the pick on Mark van Eeghen, who became a two-time Super Bowl champion and one of the franchise’s most productive rushers.
Oakland sent veteran tackle Glen Ray Hines to Pittsburgh for 1974 third- and sixth-round picks. The Raiders used the third-rounder on Mark van Eeghen, who rushed for 5,907 yards in eight Oakland seasons and helped win two Super Bowls. Hines started all 14 games for Pittsburgh in 1973, so the Steelers received useful immediate value, but van Eeghen makes Oakland the decisive winner.
Oakland acquired Warren Bankston, who became a six-season Raiders contributor and a Super Bowl champion. That sustained role gave the Raiders meaningful value from the veteran addition and supports a B- grade. The full package shows Pittsburgh received two draft choices rather than one, making the overall exchange much more balanced than a one-pick reading would suggest.
Oakland sent a 2000 third-round pick to Pittsburgh for two 1999 fifth-rounders, Nos. 146 and 163. The Raiders used No. 146 on linebacker Eric Barton, who played 160 NFL games and recorded 20 sacks. Pittsburgh later used the acquired third-rounder on Hank Poteat, a 110-game defensive back and returner. Both sides found NFL players, but Barton became the more impactful long-term starter.
Oakland sent Pittsburgh the 79th pick in the 2018 draft for wide receiver Martavis Bryant. Bryant's Raiders tenure was turbulent and brief: he was released before Week 1, re-signed, then finished 2018 with 19 catches for 266 yards and no touchdowns in eight games. The third-round cost was too high for that return, giving Pittsburgh a clear advantage.
2019 5th round pick (158th overall subsequently traded, Michael Jackson)
Pittsburgh Steelers received
Ryan Switzer
2019 6th round pick (175th overall, Sutton Smith)
The Raiders received Pittsburgh's 2019 fifth-round pick and converted that asset into A.J. McCarron in a separate trade days later. McCarron appeared in only two Raiders games and completed one of three passes. Because the acquired fifth-rounder was itself moved onward, Oakland's direct realized value from this exchange remained limited despite preserving short-term quarterback depth.
Pittsburgh salvaged meaningful value from a relationship with Antonio Brown that had become untenable, receiving 2019 third- and fifth-round picks from Oakland. The third-rounder became Diontae Johnson and the fifth became Zach Gentry, while Brown never played a regular-season snap for the Raiders. The Steelers did not receive peak-market value for an elite receiver, but converting a collapsing situation into two useful players became a decisive win.
