San Francisco 49ers received
Bob Jury
1979 third round pick (#82-Joe Montana)
Seattle Seahawks received
1979 third round pick (#57-Michael Jackson (Anthony))
San Francisco acquired safety Bob Jury and Seattle's 1979 third-round pick, No. 82. Jury started eight games for the 49ers in 1978, and the draft choice became Joe Montana, who developed into a Hall of Fame quarterback and led the franchise to four Super Bowl championships. The combination turned an ordinary-looking transaction into one of San Francisco's most consequential draft outcomes.
Seattle traded defensive lineman Manu Tuiasosopo to San Francisco in April 1984 for a fourth-round pick, No. 86 Rickey Hagood, and a 1985 tenth-round pick, No. 280 James 'Chip' Bowers. Tuiasosopo immediately started all 16 games for the 15-1 Super Bowl champion 49ers, making San Francisco's veteran acquisition the defining value in the deal.
1988 fifth-round pick (131st overall, Dennis Price)
Seattle Seahawks received
Jeff Kemp
Seattle acquired quarterback Jeff Kemp from San Francisco on May 19, 1987, for a 1988 fifth-round pick that became No. 131 overall. Kemp served as a multi-year Seahawks backup and provided useful spot-starting insurance, including five starts in 1991. For a fifth-round price, that amount of veteran quarterback utility gave Seattle the stronger return.
San Francisco moved from No. 9 to No. 7 on April 21, 2001, sending Seattle picks No. 9, No. 82 and No. 222 for No. 7 and No. 191. The 49ers selected defensive end Andre Carter at No. 7; he started 66 of 69 regular-season games for San Francisco from 2001-05 and recorded 32 sacks, including 12.5 in 2002. No. 191 became Menson Holloway, who did not appear in an NFL regular-season game.
San Francisco 49ers received Darrell Jackson from Seattle Seahawks in the 2007-04-29 trade. San Francisco acquired Darrell Jackson, who started 15 games in 2007 and caught 46 passes for 497 yards and three touchdowns. Seattle Seahawks's return was 2007 4th round pick (124th overall, Mansfield Wrotto). Seattle received pick No. 124 and used it on Mansfield Wrotto. Those realized outcomes, rather than the labels on the assets alone, drive the hindsight grade.
2017 second round pick (#34, subsequently traded to Jacksonville)
2017 fourth round pick (#111-Tedric Thompson)
San Francisco moved from No. 34 to No. 31 and selected Reuben Foster. Foster flashed starter-level talent but his 49ers tenure ended after two seasons and did not become the durable linebacker cornerstone the move-up was designed to secure. The 49ers therefore received real short-term ability without enough longevity to justify the concentrated draft investment.
