Chuck Foreman was one of the most accomplished offensive players in Vikings history, but timing matters in trade evaluation. Minnesota moved him to New England in April 1980 after his peak years were already behind him. The Patriots sent a conditional 1981 draft choice that ultimately landed in the third round at No. 74.

Minnesota used that pick on offensive tackle Tim Irwin. The result was an unusually strong return for a late-career veteran. Irwin went on to play 14 NFL seasons and became a long-term fixture on the Vikings' offensive line, appearing in more than 200 games and starting the large majority of them. A third-round selection becoming that durable is valuable under any circumstances; obtaining it for a player nearing the end of his career makes the outcome even stronger.

Foreman did not recreate his Minnesota peak in New England. His Patriots tenure was short, and the club did not receive the kind of production that would justify giving away a pick that became a decade-plus starter. That does not diminish Foreman's historical stature with the Vikings. It simply separates the player he had been from the value New England received after the trade.

Minnesota's prior C+ grade was too conservative. An A- better captures the conversion of an aging star into a starting offensive tackle with exceptional longevity. New England gets a D+ because the price was only a conditional third-rounder rather than a premium selection, but the actual return was brief and the opportunity cost became significant. The Vikings won decisively by extending value from one era of the roster into the next.
