Atlanta paid a real premium to climb eleven spots in the first round, but the target justified the move. Bob Whitfield became the Falcons' starting left tackle for most of the next decade and remained with the franchise through 2003. His 220 career games, 176 starts and Pro Bowl selection are the kind of durable return teams hope to get when they surrender multiple selections to move into the top ten.
New England's side deserves more credit than the names Tony Smith, Tony Sacca and Frankie Smith suggest at first glance because the Patriots did not simply stand pat with all three choices. They continued trading around the board, turning portions of the package into other selections and players. That makes this a useful example of draft capital functioning as currency rather than as a straight three-player return. The Patriots gained flexibility and avoided putting all of the value of the eighth pick into one prospect.
Even so, Atlanta secured the most valuable football outcome.
