Trade Analysis
New England's 2012 first-round aggression paid off immediately. The Patriots sent picks No. 27 and No. 93 to Cincinnati for No. 21 and selected Chandler Jones. Jones started from his rookie season, accumulated 36 sacks in four years with New England and earned Pro Bowl recognition in 2015. He also contributed to the 2014 team that won Super Bowl XLIX, giving the Patriots premium production at edge rusher during a championship window.
The value chain continued when New England traded Jones to Arizona in 2016 rather than extending him. The Patriots received Jonathan Cooper and pick No. 61. Cooper did not become a contributor, but New England traded No. 61 to New Orleans for picks No. 78 and No. 112, selecting Joe Thuney and Malcolm Mitchell. Thuney became a durable starting guard on two Super Bowl winners, while Mitchell caught six passes for 70 yards in the Super Bowl LI comeback.
