Trade Analysis

The Exchange

Buffalo's own historical media guides resolve a legacy uncertainty that draft compilations leave marked as tentative: the Bills received Denver's 1975 seventh-round choice for defensive lineman Bob Kampa and used that pick on Reggie Cherry. Pro Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Archives draft records independently list Cherry at No. 174 as a Buffalo selection acquired from Denver.

Denver Return

Kampa immediately contributed at the back end of the 1974 season. Pro Football Reference and Pro Football Archives credit him with four Broncos games and one start after the October 21 trade. Denver retained him through the next training camp before waiving him in September 1975.

Buffalo Return

The Bills used No. 174 on Houston running back Reggie Cherry. Pro Football Reference's 1975 Buffalo draft ledger shows no NFL seasons or games for Cherry, and he does not appear on the Bills' 1975 regular-season roster. The draft asset therefore produced no realized regular-season playing value.

Hindsight Comparison

This was a small transaction on both sides. Denver received only four games and one start from Kampa, but that still exceeds the zero-game outcome from Buffalo's seventh-round selection. The margin is real but belongs near the bottom of the grading scale.

Final Verdict

Denver Broncos Win, narrowly. A C reflects brief usable defensive-line depth from Kampa. Buffalo receives a D+ because the returned seventh-round choice became a player who never appeared in an NFL regular-season game.
