Cleveland Browns received Mike Miller at No. 147, who never appeared in an NFL regular-season game, plus the future No. 157 pick that the relocated football operation converted into 1997 No. 118 Tyrus McCloud, a 23-game Raven with two starts. The return earns a C, versus D for Philadelphia Eagles, with a hindsight verdict of Cleveland Browns Win. Concrete team-specific production and downstream results drive the grade.

Trade Analysis

The Exchange

Cleveland sent pick No. 119 in the 1995 draft to Philadelphia for No. 147 and a 1996 fifth-rounder that became No. 157. The Eagles selected quarterback Dave Barr at 119, while Cleveland selected wide receiver Mike Miller at 147. The organization that made the Cleveland trade moved to Baltimore before the 1996 draft, and that acquired No. 157 pick was then traded to Dallas for a 1997 fourth-rounder, No. 118.

Cleveland Browns Return

The direct Cleveland selection did not work. Miller never appeared in an NFL regular-season game after being drafted in the fifth round. The future pick created more value, but only after a second move: Baltimore sent No. 157 to Dallas and received the 1997 No. 118 pick used on linebacker Tyrus McCloud. McCloud played 23 games with two starts for Baltimore in 1997-98 and recorded 37 combined tackles in NFL.com's career totals. That is modest downstream production rather than a major hit.

Philadelphia Eagles Return

Philadelphia got even less from its acquired choice. The Eagles used No. 119 on Barr, then waived him on August 29, 1995, before he played a regular-season game for Philadelphia. The Rams claimed him the next day, and his entire NFL regular-season career consisted of two appearances for St. Louis, with five completions for 42 yards. None of that later Rams production belongs to the Eagles' side of this trade.

Value in Hindsight

This is a narrow win rather than a blockbuster. Cleveland's immediate fifth-round pick produced zero NFL games, but the second asset survived the franchise's move and was converted into a fourth-round selection that yielded two seasons and 23 games from McCloud. Philadelphia received no regular-season contribution from Barr at all. The Browns' side therefore created some traceable football value, even though the strongest result arrived downstream and after the move to Baltimore.

Final Verdict

Cleveland Browns Win, C to D. Miller was a miss, so Cleveland does not merit a strong grade, but the future fifth-rounder was converted into a fourth-round selection that yielded 23 games from Tyrus McCloud. Philadelphia's only acquired player was waived before ever appearing for the Eagles, creating Cleveland's narrow edge.
