Cleveland’s fourth-round pick from San Francisco became Bob Oristaglio, who played 12 Browns games in 1951 and caught one 20-yard touchdown before moving to Philadelphia. San Francisco received Gordy Soltau, and the comparison is overwhelming: Soltau spent nine seasons with the 49ers, made three straight Pro Bowls, earned three All-Pro selections, led the NFL in scoring twice and retired with a franchise-record 644 points. The 49ers earn an A+.

Trade Analysis

The Exchange

Cleveland sent Gordon “Gordy” Soltau to San Francisco on August 24, 1950 and received a 1951 fourth-round choice in return. Cleveland’s own draft history identifies that selection as the pick used on Bob Oristaglio. That gives the trade a direct comparison between one season of Browns value from the pick and Soltau’s complete 49ers career.

Cleveland Browns Return

Cleveland used the acquired fourth-rounder on Oristaglio. He appeared in all 12 Browns games in 1951, but his receiving production was one catch for 20 yards and one touchdown. By 1952 he was with Philadelphia, where he played four games. The pick therefore did produce an NFL player, but Cleveland received only a single season and a very small offensive contribution.

San Francisco 49ers Return

Soltau became one of the defining players of early 49ers history. He spent his entire nine-year NFL career with San Francisco from 1950 through 1958. The club credits him with three consecutive Pro Bowls from 1951 through 1953, three All-Pro selections over the same span, and NFL scoring leads in both 1952 and 1953. Soltau finished with 249 receptions for 3,487 yards and 25 touchdowns, made 70 field goals, and retired as San Francisco’s all-time leading scorer with 644 points.

Value in Hindsight

The gap is enormous. Cleveland’s selection yielded 12 games and one touchdown from Oristaglio. San Francisco received nine seasons, repeated league honors, two scoring titles, and a player who established the franchise scoring record. There is no unresolved pick chain or short-lived secondary asset to narrow that difference.

Final Verdict

San Francisco rises from C+ to A+ while Cleveland remains C-, and the verdict stays San Francisco 49ers Win. Oristaglio gave the Browns a real but minimal return. Soltau gave the 49ers star-level production and longevity that dwarfed the value of the fourth-round choice.
