Cleveland received two useful layers of value for Roger Zatkoff. Lew Carpenter played 22 Browns games in 1957-58, rushing for 623 yards and six touchdowns. The acquired 1958 fifth-rounder became Jim Gibbons, whose rights Cleveland later sent back to Detroit for the 1959 fifth-round pick used on John Wooten; Wooten started 94 games in nine Browns seasons and made two Pro Bowls. Detroit still got a 24-start championship linebacker in Zatkoff.

Trade Analysis

The Exchange

Cleveland traded linebacker Roger Zatkoff to Detroit on September 5, 1957 for halfback Lew Carpenter and Detroit’s 1958 fifth-round pick. The Browns used that pick at No. 61 on Jim Gibbons. Cleveland later sent Gibbons back to Detroit and received a 1959 fifth-round choice, which the Browns used on guard John Wooten.

Cleveland Browns Return

Carpenter gave Cleveland immediate offensive production. Across 22 games in 1957 and 1958, he rushed 156 times for 623 yards and six touchdowns and added 10 receptions for 112 yards. The draft asset became more important over time. Although Cleveland selected Gibbons in 1958, its own draft history records the later Gibbons-for-pick deal with Detroit. The resulting 1959 fifth-rounder produced Wooten, who played nine Browns seasons, appeared in 122 games, started 94, and earned Pro Bowl selections in 1965 and 1966.

Detroit Lions Return

Detroit also received a strong, concrete return. Zatkoff started all 12 games at right linebacker in 1957 and all 12 again in 1958. The 1957 Lions won the NFL championship, and Zatkoff started for that title team. His Detroit tenure lasted only those two seasons, but 24 starts and a championship-season role make him substantially more valuable than a disposable veteran return.

Value in Hindsight

This is not a case where one side failed. Detroit got two full seasons from an established starting linebacker at the heart of a championship defense. Cleveland, however, received Carpenter’s two useful seasons plus a pick chain that can be traced directly to Wooten. Nine Browns seasons and 94 starts from Wooten, on top of Carpenter’s production, create the larger cumulative outcome.

Final Verdict

Cleveland rises to an A, Detroit to B+, and the verdict changes from Even Trade to Cleveland Browns Win. Zatkoff made Detroit’s side successful, but Carpenter plus the downstream Wooten asset gave Cleveland both immediate production and a long-term starting lineman.
