New York acquired defensive back Eddie Dove from San Francisco in September 1963 for backup quarterback Ralph Guglielmi and a future draft choice that became the 49ers' 1965 third-round pick, No. 29 Bob Schweickert. Dove played 12 games for the Giants that season, intercepted two passes for 75 yards and handled punt returns for an Eastern Division champion. Guglielmi refused to report to San Francisco, and Schweickert never played a regular-season game for the 49ers.

Trade Analysis
The September 1963 exchange is clearer than the legacy record suggests. A contemporary Associated Press report published September 25 says the Giants traded backup quarterback Ralph Guglielmi and a draft choice to San Francisco for defensive back Eddie Dove. Pro Sports Transactions later links that draft consideration to the Giants' 1965 third-round choice, No. 29, which the 49ers used on Virginia Tech's Bob Schweickert. San Francisco's own draft history independently labels Schweickert's pick as coming from the New York Giants. Those sources support one player and one future pick going to San Francisco, with Dove going to New York; the duplicate undisclosed-consideration fields in the old row are not part of the documented package.
New York received immediate value from Dove. NFL and Giants historical statistics credit him with 12 games for the Giants in 1963, two interceptions for 75 yards and 17 punt returns for 198 yards. Pro Football Reference also records his Giants stint as the final season of his NFL career after five years with San Francisco. The Giants went on to win the Eastern Division and reach the 1963 NFL Championship Game. Dove was not a central star on that veteran roster, but he supplied usable secondary and return-game depth during a championship-level season.
San Francisco's player return never materialized. Contemporary reporting and later biographical accounts state that Guglielmi chose to quit rather than report to the 49ers. He subsequently returned to football with Philadelphia, so San Francisco received no regular-season snaps from him. The future pick did become a real third-round asset: the 49ers selected Bob Schweickert at No. 29 in the 1965 NFL Draft. Pro Football Reference records Schweickert as a 49ers draftee, but his professional regular-season appearances came later in the AFL with the New York Jets. He did not produce regular-season value for San Francisco.
In hindsight, New York gets the better of a modest trade. Dove's 12 games, two interceptions and punt-return work are limited to one season, so the Giants' gain should not be overstated. Still, it is concrete production during an Eastern Division title run, while San Francisco received neither a reporting quarterback nor NFL production from the draft choice it ultimately exercised. A B- for New York and D+ for San Francisco reflects that asymmetry while keeping the grades proportional to the deal's scale.
