Trade Analysis
Buffalo traded for Rasul Douglas at the 2023 deadline because injuries had weakened a defense with Super Bowl expectations. The Bills sent Green Bay a 2024 third-round pick and received Douglas plus a 2024 fifth. Douglas had been one of the Packers’ most productive ball-hawking corners, and Buffalo needed a veteran who could step into the lineup immediately.
Douglas did exactly that in 2023. In nine regular-season games with Buffalo, eight starts, he recorded four interceptions, eight passes defensed and a defensive touchdown. He gave the secondary stability during a late-season run that ended with the AFC East title. In 2024 he started all 15 games he played and recorded 58 tackles, five passes defensed and a forced fumble. He also started throughout Buffalo’s playoff run to the AFC Championship Game. Douglas left after the season, so the Bills received roughly a year and a half rather than a long-term corner.
Green Bay used the third-round selection, No. 91, on Missouri linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper. Hopper appeared in all 17 games as a rookie, mostly on special teams, and again played all 17 in 2025 while making two starts. Through two seasons he has 33 tackles and remains on a rookie contract. The Packers therefore did not waste the compensation, even though Hopper has not matched Douglas’ immediate defensive impact. Buffalo’s fifth-rounder became another depth opportunity, adding to the value on the Bills’ side.
The original A-/C grades overstated the separation. Buffalo deserves credit for acquiring a starting corner who produced four interceptions almost immediately and helped two playoff teams. But the Bills did not retain him beyond 2024, while Green Bay still has a young linebacker under control.
A B+ for Buffalo and C+ for Green Bay is more balanced. Buffalo wins because Douglas supplied meaningful high-leverage production, but Green Bay received a legitimate continuing asset rather than an empty return.
