Trade Analysis
Miami acquired Tyreek Hill in March 2022 for five selections: a 2022 first, second and fourth plus 2023 fourth- and sixth-round picks. The Dolphins then gave Hill a major contract and built Mike McDaniel's offense around his speed. Kansas City accepted the difficult task of replacing an elite receiver because the front office wanted cap flexibility and a larger supply of inexpensive talent around Patrick Mahomes.
Hill's Miami peak was extraordinary. He caught 119 passes for 1,710 yards in 2022 and repeated the 119 catches in 2023 while setting a franchise record with 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was a unanimous first-team All-Pro in 2023. His production fell to 81 catches for 959 yards and six scores in 2024, then an injury-shortened 2025 produced 21 catches for 265 yards and one touchdown. Through those four seasons, Miami still received 340 receptions, 4,733 yards and 27 receiving touchdowns.
Kansas City's return became an extended asset tree. The Chiefs received picks 29, 50 and 121 in 2022 plus two 2023 selections. Kansas City combined No. 29 and No. 121 with its own third-rounder to move to No. 21 for Trent McDuffie. McDuffie became an All-Pro, played a central role on two Super Bowl champions and, in March 2026, was traded to the Rams for a first, fifth and sixth in 2026 plus a 2027 third. Other Hill-trade selections also gave Kansas City flexibility throughout its 2022-23 draft maneuvering.
It would be misleading to credit every player Kansas City selected in those drafts directly to Hill; several choices were moved and combined with other assets. The broader result remains powerful. Miami received one of the greatest receiving stretches in franchise history, while Kansas City replenished a championship roster and kept the value chain alive into 2027.
Both clubs deserve elite grades. Miami rises to A for Hill's production. Kansas City earns A+ because the picks, cap reset, McDuffie championships and later McDuffie return created even more durable value. The verdict shifts narrowly to Kansas City.
