2002 NBA Trades

Denver sent James Posey to Houston in a December 2002 three-team deal and received Mark Bryant, Art Long and future first- and second-round rights. Houston sent Kenny Thomas to Philadelphia and received Posey. The 76ers acquired Thomas to bolster their frontcourt. The inherited Nuggets Win gives Denver A, Houston B+ and Philadelphia C, now with the missing 76ers return properly recorded.

Chicago acquired Erick Barkley and $1 million from San Antonio for a conditional 2007 second-round pick that did not convey.

Denver acquired Chris Whitney from Washington Wizards for George McCloud; $500K cash.

Detroit acquired 2003 second round pick (#58 – Andreas Glyniadakis) from San Antonio Spurs for Mengke Bateer.

Denver acquired Rodney White from Detroit Pistons for Don Reid; Mengke Bateer; first-round pick (2004 #17-Josh Smith).

Cleveland acquired Michael Stewart and first round pick (protected top 17 in 2005, top 16 in 2006, top 15 in 2007-08) (2007 #22-Jared Dudley) for Lamond Murray and 2003 or 2004 second round pick (2004 #39-Albert Miralles), producing a clear Cavaliers win on realized player, draft and roster value.

Cleveland exchanged 2008 second round pick (#48-Malik Hairston) for Milt Palacio, with broadly comparable realized returns.

Detroit won by acquiring Richard Hamilton, Hubert Davis and Bobby Simmons for Jerry Stackhouse and two depth assets.

The Nets acquired Dikembe Mutombo from 76ers in exchange for Keith Van Horn; Todd MacCulloch.

In August 2002, Portland sent Steve Kerr, Erick Barkley and a 2003 second-round pick to San Antonio for Antonio Daniels, Charles Smith and Amal McCaskill. Daniels played 67 games for Portland; Kerr played 75 games for the 2003 champion Spurs and delivered four three-pointers against Dallas in the Western Conference finals. The Seattle SuperSonics acquired Kenny Anderson, Joseph Forte and Vitaly Potapenko from Boston in July 2002 for Vin Baker and Shammond Williams. Baker's Celtics years were disrupted by health and personal difficulties, while Potapenko provided Seattle with reserve-center production. The inherited Sonics advantage, A against Boston F, reflects the poor outcome of the Baker gamble.

Memphis came out ahead in the 2002-06-28 trade with San Antonio Spurs, receiving rights to Gordan Giricek for 2004 second-round pick (#52-Romain Sato); cash.

Los Angeles Lakers captured a clear realized-value win in the 2002-06-26 transaction with Toronto Raptors, receiving Tracy Murray; Kareem Rush; plus 1 additional asset for Lindsey Hunter; rights to Chris Jefferies; plus 1 additional asset.

Memphis bought the rights to Milwaukee's 2002 No. 48 selection Chris Owens for a 2003 second-round pick that became No. 35 Szymon Szewczyk. Owens signed with the Grizzlies but was waived in 2003 without recording a regular-season NBA game; Szewczyk also never appeared in the league for Milwaukee. Even Trade, C- each, with neither side receiving the NBA production implied by the earlier Bucks-favored evaluation.

Milwaukee acquired rights to Jamal Sampson while sending out rights to Rashard Griffith in the 2002-06-26 transaction with Magic.

On June 26, 2002, Sacramento Kings acquired first round pick (2003 #25-Carlos Delfino) from Atlanta Hawks in exchange for rights to Dan Dickau.

San Antonio acquired Speedy Claxton from Philadelphia on June 26, 2002 for Mark Bryant plus the draft rights to John Salmons and Randy Holcomb. Claxton played only 30 regular-season games for the Spurs, but he became an important backup during the 2003 championship run and scored 13 points with four assists in the title-clinching Game 6. Philadelphia received the longer direct return through Salmons, who played 281 games for the 76ers across four seasons, making the trade much closer than the legacy grades suggested.

On June 26, 2002, Utah Jazz acquired rights to Curtis Borchardt from Orlando Magic in exchange for rights to Ryan Humphrey and rights to Jamal Sampson.

On June 25, 2002, Washington sent Courtney Alexander to the Hornets, then relocating from Charlotte to New Orleans, for draft pick No. 17, used on Juan Dixon. Dixon played 176 Wizards regular-season games during his initial three-year stint, scoring 1,441 points, and helped Washington reach the 2005 postseason. Alexander played 66 games for New Orleans in 2002-03 and scored 523 points. Wizards Win, Washington A-, Hornets D+.

Minnesota acquired center Marc Jackson from Golden State on February 21, 2002, sending Dean Garrett and a future second-round choice that ultimately became No. 36 Jermareo Davidson in 2007. Jackson contributed Timberwolves frontcourt minutes across portions of two seasons. Garrett played five Golden State games in the remainder of 2001-02, but the future draft asset was later included in a larger 2007 Golden State exchange. Slight Wolves Edge, B versus B-.

Boston acquired Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers from Phoenix at the February 20, 2002 deadline, sending rookie Joe Johnson, Randy Brown, Milt Palacio and its 2002 first-round selection later used at No. 22 for Casey Jacobsen. Delk and Rogers aided Boston's 2002 Eastern Conference Finals run, but Johnson developed into a major Suns backcourt scorer alongside Steve Nash before his later move to Atlanta. Indiana sent Jalen Rose, Travis Best, Norm Richardson and a second-round pick to Chicago for Ron Artest, Brad Miller, Ron Mercer and Kevin Ollie.
