Dallas acquired defensive lineman John Dutton for its first- and second-round picks in 1980. Dutton became a long-term piece of the Cowboys defense and remained with the club through 1987, giving Dallas years of starting value from an established player. That sustained contribution outweighed the two draft choices Baltimore ultimately used on Derrick Hatchett and Tim Foley.
Detroit sent Miami three later picks in the 1998 draft to acquire No. 60 and selected quarterback Charlie Batch. Batch started 46 games for the Lions and ultimately played 81 NFL games, throwing for 11,085 career yards. Miami used the return on Brad Jackson, Scott Shaw and John Dutton. Jackson became a useful defender, but the package did not approach the value of a multi-year starting quarterback.
