McCargo played only 44 career games, started once and never became the interior force Buffalo envisioned. Chicago used No. 42 on Danieal Manning, who became a versatile defensive back and elite returner, and No. 73 on Dusty Dvoracek, making the Bears' trade-down an emphatic win.
Buffalo and Indianapolis announced a deadline deal on October 14, 2008 that would have sent defensive tackle John McCargo to the Colts for a conditional draft pick. The exchange never became effective: McCargo failed Indianapolis' physical, the trade was voided, and his rights returned to Buffalo. No player or draft choice ultimately changed clubs.
