Kansas City traded rookie defensive tackle Cliff Frazier to Philadelphia on August 11, 1976, for two future draft choices. Those selections became the 1977 fourth-round pick used on Mark Bailey and the 1978 fifth-round pick used on Dwight Carey. Bailey produced 27 games and nine starts for the Chiefs, giving Kansas City the clearest lasting return from the exchange.

The Colts acquired Mark Bailey from Kansas City for a 1980 fifth-round pick, No. 114. Kansas City used that selection on wide receiver Carlos Carson, who became a two-time Pro Bowler, produced 6,360 receiving yards for the Chiefs and later entered the club's Hall of Honor. Bailey did not provide Indianapolis with anything close to that level of service. Turning a fifth-round return into a long-term featured receiver gives Kansas City a decisive win.
