Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts
Denver acquired the rights to No. 1 overall pick John Elway from the Colts for Chris Hinton, Mark Herrmann and a 1984 first-round selection that became Ron Solt. Elway became Denver's Hall of Fame franchise quarterback, leading five Super Bowl appearances and two championships. Hinton and Solt gave the Colts substantial value, but no return could match Elway's transformative career.

Indianapolis sent quarterback Mark Herrmann to San Diego on March 27, 1985, for a 1986 tenth-round pick that became No. 266 and guard Pete Anderson. Herrmann gave the Chargers three seasons of backup quarterback value, including 1,537 passing yards and 10 touchdowns in 1985. Anderson never appeared in an NFL regular-season game. San Diego clearly received the stronger realized return from a low-cost exchange.

San Diego sent quarterback Mark Herrmann back to Indianapolis in April 1988 for a late 1989 draft choice. Chargers historical records identify the compensation as an eleventh-round pick, not a conditional selection that disappeared. Herrmann did not survive the Colts' final 1988 roster decisions and soon joined the Rams, leaving Indianapolis without regular-season value. San Diego at least secured draft capital, producing a modest C+ to D+ Chargers win.
