New England sent the No. 81 pick and its tenth-round selection, No. 275, to the Raiders for Nos. 98 and 102 in the 1987 draft. Los Angeles used No. 81 on fullback Steve Smith and No. 275 on quarterback John Paye. Smith became a long-term Raiders starter. New England drafted Rich Gannon and Derrick Beasley, but Gannon was traded to Minnesota before playing for the Patriots.

Minnesota acquired New England's rights to Rich Gannon shortly after the 1987 draft and ultimately sent fourth- and eleventh-round choices in 1988. Gannon spent six seasons with the Vikings and became a multi-year starter, giving Minnesota useful quarterback value long before his later MVP peak elsewhere. That production outweighs the modest return New England realized from the two selections.

Washington acquired Rich Gannon from Minnesota in August 1993 for conditional draft compensation that ultimately included the 1994 fifth-round pick used on Shelly Hammonds. Gannon started only four games for Washington and missed the following season with a shoulder injury. Minnesota's pick produced little, so Washington still won the immediate exchange, although Gannon's later MVP years came elsewhere and should not inflate this return.
