Ron Smith NFL Trade History

The Los Angeles Rams dealt Tom Wilson to Minnesota in July 1963 and received the Vikings' 1964 tenth-round pick, No. 131, which became Ron Smith. The Chargers acquired defensive back and return specialist Ron Smith from Chicago for the 1974 third-round pick used on Wayne Wheeler. Smith immediately led the NFL in punt-return average, scored two punt-return touchdowns, and started nine games for San Diego in 1973. The Chargers then traded him for two more picks in 1974, creating a decisive value advantage.

Oakland acquired veteran safety Ron Smith from San Diego on August 15, 1974 for 1975 fourth- and eighth-round selections. San Diego used the fourth-rounder at No. 101 on Ken Bernich and the eighth-rounder at No. 206 on Ralph Perretta. Smith was a veteran safety moving to Oakland, while San Diego's compensation was entirely future draft capital. That balance of realized value gives the edge to Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers.
