New Orleans Saints received
1971 fourth round pick (#82-Carlos Bell)
Buffalo acquired center Frank Marchlewski from New Orleans for a 1971 fourth-round pick that became Carlos Bell at No. 82. Marchlewski immediately started all 13 games he played for the Bills in 1970, giving Buffalo a full season of dependable offensive-line value. Bell reached the Saints but appeared in only one NFL game. Turning a future fourth-rounder into an immediate starting center gives Buffalo the clear advantage.
1975 sixth-round pick, No. 149 overall, used on Mike Lemon (probable linkage)
Buffalo acquired veteran defensive lineman Dave Long from New Orleans on August 29, 1973 for an undisclosed draft choice. Long was released before the regular season and never appeared in a Bills game. The Saints later held Buffalo's 1975 sixth-round pick at No. 149, used on Mike Lemon, and transaction research identifies the Long trade as the probable source. Buffalo received no realized regular-season value.
Buffalo acquired veteran guard Conrad Dobler from New Orleans for the 1981 eighth-round pick that became No. 214, Gene Gladys. Dobler immediately became a starter, playing 30 games with 29 starts for the Bills across 1980 and 1981. New Orleans used the pick on Gladys, but available draft records credit him with no NFL regular-season games. Buffalo received the clearly stronger football return.
Buffalo moved a future third-round pick to New Orleans for the 1983 fourth-round choice used on defensive end Jimmy Payne. Payne spent his rookie year on injured reserve and never developed into an NFL contributor. The cost became meaningful when the Saints used Buffalo's 1984 third-rounder on safety Terry Hoage, who started 13 games with four interceptions for New Orleans in 1985.
undisclosed future draft choice (selection not identified)
Buffalo acquired veteran safety Tommy Myers from New Orleans on August 4, 1983 for an undisclosed future draft choice. Contemporary reporting confirms the player-for-pick structure, but Myers did not make the Bills' regular-season roster and was released on August 29. The exact draft choice sent to New Orleans is not identified in the reviewed record.
Buffalo acquired linebacker Courtney Watson from New Orleans for tight end Tim Euhus in June 2006. Neither player generated regular-season production for the team that acquired him. Watson's recorded NFL appearances ended with the Saints, and Euhus later played for Pittsburgh and Arizona rather than New Orleans. The swap gave both clubs a change-of-scenery evaluation without producing game-day value, leaving the deal essentially even at a low grade.
