1973 draft choice (exact round and selection not identified)
Houston traded Sam Walton to Minnesota in July 1972 for a future 1973 draft choice. Historical transaction listings and contemporary reporting support the exchange, while the round and eventual selection remain unidentified. Walton gave Minnesota another veteran option entering Bud Grant's sixth season, but no clearly documented long-term Vikings impact or traceable Oilers draft payoff creates a decisive hindsight edge.
Minnesota acquired Houston’s No. 2 overall pick on April 9, 1985 for the Vikings’ No. 3 and No. 30 selections. The Vikings later moved No. 2 to Atlanta and came away with No. 4 Chris Doleman plus No. 60 Tim Meamber. That chain gave Minnesota a Hall of Fame pass rusher, making the acquired No. 2 choice enormously valuable even though Minnesota did not make the selection itself.
Minnesota covenant preserving Houston's access to Ray Childress at No. 3 overall
Minnesota received the 30th pick in the 1985 draft after agreeing not to select Ray Childress at No. 2 or trade that choice to a team that intended to take him. The Vikings used No. 30 on cornerback Issiac Holt, who became a useful starter and later part of the Herschel Walker package. Houston preserved access to Childress, who became a franchise defensive cornerstone.
Minnesota acquired Warren Moon for a 1994 fourth-round pick and a 1995 third-round pick, a modest price for a proven Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback. Moon immediately gave the Vikings two high-level seasons, set franchise passing records, and reached the Pro Bowl in 1994 and 1995. For a team built to contend, converting two mid-round selections into that level of quarterback play was an excellent short-term use of draft capital.
2012 7th round pick (211th overall, Scott Solomon)
Minnesota sent the 2012 No. 211 pick to Tennessee for the Titans' 2013 sixth-round selection. Tennessee used No. 211 on Scott Solomon. Minnesota's future choice became No. 176, which the Vikings later moved to Arizona in the A.J. Jefferson trade and used that exchange to add Jefferson plus the pick that became Michael Mauti. Official Titans records confirm that No. 163 and No. 224 were not part of this transaction.
