Trade Analysis
Minnesota moved up one spot in the 2024 first round because quarterback was the position it could not risk losing. The Vikings sent picks 11, 129 and 157 to the Jets for Nos. 10 and 203. Minnesota selected J.J. McCarthy at No. 10 and kicker Will Reichard at No. 203. New York stayed at No. 11 and drafted Penn State tackle Olu Fashanu, while later moving the additional mid-round assets in subsequent transactions.
McCarthy’s timeline has made the trade difficult to grade quickly. He missed his entire rookie season after knee surgery, then finally became Minnesota’s starter in 2025. Across 10 games, he completed 140 of 243 passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, a 72.6 passer rating. He also rushed for 181 yards and four touchdowns. There were encouraging moments, including late-season improvement, but the overall passing production remained volatile enough that Minnesota still entered 2026 needing proof of long-term quarterback stability.
Reichard has dramatically improved the Vikings’ return. In 2025 he made 33 of 35 field goals and all 31 extra points, earned Associated Press First-Team All-Pro honors and set a franchise record with a 62-yard field goal. He also made 11 field goals from at least 50 yards. A sixth-round kicker becoming one of the league’s best specialists matters in evaluating the full package.
Fashanu, meanwhile, became the kind of foundational tackle New York hoped to secure. After seven starts as a rookie, he started all 17 games at left tackle in 2025 and logged 992 offensive snaps as the Jets used the same offensive line for the entire season.
The Jets remain ahead because a full-season starting left tackle is already a premium-position success, while McCarthy remains uncertain. But Reichard prevents the Minnesota side from being reduced to the quarterback alone. A B+ for New York and B- for Minnesota keeps the Jets as the winner while recognizing that the Vikings already received elite specialist value and still have upside if McCarthy develops.
