NFL Trade Verdict

New Orleans acquired defensive tackle Steve George from St.…

New Orleans acquired defensive tackle Steve George from St. Louis in late July 1976 for an undisclosed choice in the 1977 NFL draft. George never appeared in a Saints regular-season game; he went to injured reserve in August, was released, and later played one game for Atlanta. St. Louis therefore recovered draft capital for a player who produced no regular-season value for New Orleans.

Trade Analysis

The old TradeVerdicts row duplicated both sides of this transaction and pointed the verdict in the wrong direction. Contemporary reporting summarized in the surviving transaction record places Steve George's move from St. Louis to New Orleans in late July 1976 for an undisclosed choice in the 1977 NFL draft. The player appears only once and the Cardinals received only one draft asset, so the duplicate Stephen George / Steve George and duplicate undisclosed-pick entries are removed. George had some pedigree when New Orleans acquired him. St. Louis had selected him in the third round of the 1974 draft, 60th overall, after obtaining that selection from San Francisco. NFL and Pro Football Reference records credit him with 13 regular-season games for the Cardinals in 1974, including one start. He then missed the entire 1975 season with a knee injury, which made the 1976 acquisition a rehabilitation bet rather than the purchase of an established current starter. The bet did not produce regular-season value for the Saints. The transaction history says George was placed on injured reserve in August 1976 and later released. NFL and Pro Football Reference career logs show no New Orleans regular-season appearance; his only 1976 NFL game came later with Atlanta. That means New Orleans surrendered a 1977 draft asset and received zero regular-season games in return. The exact value on the St. Louis side cannot be fully reconstructed. The pick was undisclosed, and the public draft ledgers reviewed for this pass do not provide a source-safe mapping from this transaction to a specific 1977 Cardinals selection. TradeVerdicts therefore does not invent a round or downstream player. Even without that mapping, the direction of the outcome is clearer than the previous Saints-win verdict suggested. St. Louis converted an injured player who would never play a Saints regular-season game into draft capital. New Orleans received no realized regular-season production before George was released. The Cardinals receive a C+ for extracting an asset with unresolved downstream value; the Saints receive a D for spending a draft choice on a player who never appeared for them. Confidence is medium because the transaction and George's lack of Saints production are well supported, while the exact pick identity remains unresolved.
