New York traded linebacker John Guzik to Baltimore in early August 1961 for end Jerry Richardson. Richardson failed to make the Giants and was returned to the Colts on August 20, converting Baltimore's obligation into a future draft choice. Guzik also failed to produce a regular-season game for Baltimore before being released and later joining Houston of the AFL. The Giants therefore ended the exchange with an unidentified future pick while neither original player contributed in a regular-season game for his acquiring NFL club.

Trade Analysis
The legacy row conflates the original player trade with the later compensation adjustment. Baltimore's own historical trade ledger records end Jerry Richardson going to the New York Giants for John Guzik in 1961. Contemporary reports place the exchange in early August, with widely cited transaction histories using August 3. The important second step came less than three weeks later: the Giants returned Richardson after he failed to make their roster. An Associated Press report published August 21 stated that because Richardson did not make New York while Guzik was still with Baltimore, the Colts then owed the Giants a future draft choice.
Richardson therefore should not appear on both sides of the trade as if he were permanently acquired and then separately sent back in a new exchange. He was the original Colts asset conveyed to New York, then returned under the terms or practical unwind of the deal. Pro Football Archives records Richardson with Baltimore in 1959 and 1960, the 1961 move to the Giants, and his August return to the Colts. He never appeared in a regular-season game for New York. His two prior Colts seasons totaled 23 games, but that earlier production is not value created by the 1961 trade.
Guzik likewise did not generate regular-season value for Baltimore. He had played 12 games for the Los Angeles Rams in 1960 before his rights reached the Giants in an earlier three-team transaction. After the Giants sent him to Baltimore, the Colts later released him. Guzik then joined the Houston Oilers of the American Football League and appeared in three games during their 1961 championship season. Those Oilers appearances occurred after Baltimore no longer controlled him and therefore do not count as Colts trade return.
The remaining Giants asset is the future draft choice Baltimore owed once Richardson was returned. The surviving public evidence located for this review does not securely identify the round or eventual selection, so TradeVerdicts should preserve it only as an unidentified future pick. That is more accurate than the legacy row's duplicate Richardson entries, generic undisclosed-consideration placeholders and unidentified draft-pick field presented as though all were simultaneous trade pieces.
The Giants receive a modest hindsight edge because the player they surrendered produced no Baltimore regular-season value and the failed Richardson acquisition was converted into future draft capital. The exact pick is unresolved, which limits how much credit New York can receive. A C+ for the Giants and D for the Colts reflects that narrow known advantage while avoiding invented downstream value.
