1999 NBA Trades

Portland sent six rotation players to Houston for Scottie Pippen, who became the defensive and playmaking connector of a 59-win team that reached Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference finals.

Chicago exchanged 2000 second round pick (#31-Dan Langhi) for Chris Anstey in a transaction with broadly balanced realized value.

The Nets acquired Johnny Newman from Clippers in exchange for Eric Murdock.

Detroit acquired Derek Harper from Los Angeles Lakers for rights to Melvin Levett.

Orlando acquired 2001 conditional second round pick (#32-Omar Cook) from Washington Wizards for rights to Laron Profit.

Dallas received Sean Rooks; 2000 second-round pick (#58-Pete Mickeal) from Los Angeles Lakers and sent A.C. Green in return.

Houston acquired Steve Francis and Tony Massenburg from Vancouver plus Don MacLean and Orlando's 2001 first-round pick; Vancouver received Michael Dickerson, Othella Harrington, Brent Price, Antoine Carr and draft assets; Orlando received four Vancouver players.

Milwaukee acquired Danny Manning; Dale Ellis while sending out Chris Gatling; Armen Gilliam in the 1999-08-19 transaction with Magic.

On August 13, 1999 Philadelphia acquired veteran Billy Owens from Orlando for Harvey Grant and Anthony Parker. Orlando waived Grant before the season and played Parker sixteen regular-season games and 185 minutes before waiving him in January. Owens saw regular-season action for Philadelphia before being included in a later multiteam exchange. The older Magic-favored verdict overlooked both waivers. 76ers Win, Philadelphia B-, Orlando C-.

Chicago received Hersey Hawkins, James Cotton for Brent Barry and finished with a modest realized-value edge.

Orlando sent Ike Austin to Washington on August 11, 1999 for Ben Wallace, Terry Davis, Tim Legler and Jeff McInnis. Wallace immediately started all 81 Magic games, averaged 8.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks, then became part of the 2000 Grant Hill sign-and-trade. Davis and McInnis were waived before contributing, Legler never played for Orlando, and Austin gave Washington 59 games and 23 starts. The one-year Wallace return alone created a clear Orlando advantage, but Washington did receive real short-term center minutes.

Clippers Win. Atlanta Hawks earns C-; Los Angeles Clippers earns A-. Atlanta gained an available professional player, which shouldn't be dismissed simply because the Clippers later

Orlando sent Penny Hardaway to Phoenix on August 5, 1999 for Danny Manning, Pat Garrity and two future Suns first-round picks. Hardaway still gave Phoenix 236 regular-season games, including a 16.9-point first season and a strong 2000 playoff run, but injuries prevented a return to his Orlando peak. Garrity became a 513-game Magic rotation player, while both firsts retained trade value. The second pick was eventually returned to Phoenix before the 2002 draft, so Orlando must not be credited with Amar'e Stoudemire as a player.

Cleveland exchanged Derek Anderson and Johnny Newman for Lamond Murray, with the realized return ultimately favorable to Clippers.

Boston acquired Danny Fortson, Eric Williams, Eric Washington and a future first-round right from Denver in August 1999 for Ron Mercer, Ronald Jones and Dwayne Schintzius. Williams became a useful Celtics forward again while the pick eventually became No. 11 Kedrick Brown in 2001. Mercer gave Denver scoring but moved on. The inherited Celtics Win reflects the broader incoming package.

Orlando traded Nick Anderson to Sacramento for Tariq Abdul-Wahad and a 2003 first (Kendrick Perkins No. 27).

Portland acquired Steve Smith and Ed Gray from Atlanta in August 1999, giving up Isaiah Rider and Jim Jackson. Smith supplied productive shooting and helped the Trail Blazers reach the 2000 Western Conference Finals, while Rider had a turbulent Hawks stay. Portland's stronger receiving-team performance justifies the inherited Blazers Win, Portland A and Atlanta D.

Toronto won the Antonio Davis–Jonathan Bender exchange because Davis became an All-Star, interior anchor and central figure in the franchise’s first playoff era, while injuries prevented Bender from developing into the star Indiana projected.

Atlanta sent draft rights to Roberto Bergersen to Portland for cash in June 1999. Bergersen did not establish a substantial NBA role with Portland, while the Hawks took a direct financial return. The inherited Even Trade assigns C to both clubs, reflecting a minor rights transaction with little playing impact.

Philadelphia acquired Jumaine Jones's No. 27 draft rights from Atlanta in 1999 for a 2000 protected first-round choice. Jones developed into an NBA forward for the 76ers, while the Hawks soon traded the incoming pick in a separate transaction for Lorenzen Wright. That subsequent asset use, not the Clippers' later Quentin Richardson games, is the concrete Atlanta benefit.

Dallas received draft rights to Leon Smith from San Antonio Spurs and sent draft rights to Gordan Giricek; 2000 second-round pick (#41-Chris Carrawell) in return.

Golden State finished with a modest edge. The Warriors acquired rights to Vonteego Cummings; first round pick (lottery protected) (2001 #14-Troy Murphy) from Indiana Pacers for rights to Jeff Foster.

Minnesota sold the rights to No. 42 selection Louis Bullock to Orlando for cash on June 30, 1999. Orlando brought Bullock to preseason camp but waived him October 27 without a regular-season NBA appearance. Bullock had a substantial European career afterward, which wasn't Magic production. Wolves Win, Minnesota C+ for the cash return and Orlando D+ for an unrealized draft-rights option.

Seattle brought in Horace Grant and two seconds but gave Orlando the rights to Corey Maggette along with veteran depth, a package that aged better for the Magic.

On June 29, 1999, Atlanta sent veteran point guard Mookie Blaylock and the rights to 1999 No. 21 Jeff Foster to Golden State for the rights to No. 10 Jason Terry plus Duane Ferrell and Vernell Coles. Terry became Atlanta's principal backcourt scorer over five seasons before a later 2004 trade to Dallas. Golden State gained Blaylock's veteran defense, but it later moved Foster's rights separately rather than employing him in NBA games. Hawks Win, Atlanta A and Golden State B-.

The 1999 three-team trade sent Stephon Marbury to New Jersey, Sam Cassell to Milwaukee and Terrell Brandon plus the first-round pick that became Wally Szczerbiak to Minnesota.

Cleveland received Andrew DeClercq and Boston's first-round pick that became No. 8 Andre Miller in 1999 in exchange for Vitaly Potapenko. Miller developed into a high-quality Cavaliers floor general; Potapenko was a useful Boston center but couldn't justify the lottery pick's eventual value. Cavaliers Win, Cleveland A to Boston D.

Houston traded Rodrick Rhodes to Vancouver on March 11, 1999, for Sam Mack. Mack played 25 regular-season Rockets games after the trade, totaling 506 minutes, 230 points and 45 three-pointers on 40.5 percent shooting. Rhodes appeared in only ten Vancouver regular-season games, scoring 34 points in 123 minutes. Rockets Win, Houston B-, Vancouver D+; the modern Memphis team ID represents the Vancouver franchise of 1999.

Even Trade: This trade belongs in the small group of deals where fit mattered more than raw career ranking. Thomas had the longer and more offensively versatile Bucks tenure; Hill supplied exactly the rugged frontcourt work Philadelphia needed during its Finals season. The completed results support two strong grades rather than forcing a winner where the value was genuinely balanced.

New York acquired rights to Mirsad Turkcan from 76ers for first round pick (lottery protected in 1999) (2000 #18-Quentin Richardson). The partner captured substantially more realized value than New York.

Charlotte acquired Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell for Glen Rice, J.R. Reid and B.J. Armstrong. Jones became an All-Star and elite defender, while Campbell supplied starting-center value. Los Angeles received a championship starter in Rice and later used his contract in the Horace Grant transaction, leaving both teams with meaningful competitive returns.

The 1999-02-04 exchange produced broadly comparable realized value: 2000 second round pick (#55-Chris Porter) for Todd Fuller.

The 1999-01-23 exchange produced broadly comparable realized value: Andrew Lang for conditional second round pick (2001 #51-Andre Hutson).

Chicago acquired Mark Bryant, Martin Muursepp, Bubba Wells, plus 1 additional asset from Suns for Luc Longley, producing a clear realized-value win.

Detroit received Christian Laettner from Atlanta for Scot Pollard and a conditional 1999 first-round selection in January 1999. Atlanta waived Pollard weeks later but used the draft right in a later sequence of transactions. Laettner played all 82 games for the Pistons in 1999-2000, averaging 12.2 points and 6.7 rebounds; Detroit got the better direct player contribution.

The Nets acquired Jim McIlvaine from Sonics in exchange for Michael Cage; Don MacLean.

On January 21, 1999, Boston acquired center Tony Battie from the Los Angeles Lakers for Travis Knight during the compressed post-lockout transaction period. Battie became a Celtics rotation big through the 2002 Eastern Conference Finals and remained until a separate December 2003 Cleveland trade. Knight had a shorter and less impactful return to Los Angeles. Celtics Win, Boston A- for sustained frontcourt depth and the Lakers C+ for receiving a usable veteran contract rather than a long-term starter.

Houston acquired Scottie Pippen for Roy Rogers and a future second-round pick, received a full season of high-level two-way play, and then retained enough leverage to move Pippen for a six-player package; Chicago captured almost no comparable value.

Denver received Chauncey Billups and the rights to Tyson Wheeler in a January 1999 three-team trade. Minnesota acquired Bobby Jackson and Dean Garrett, while Toronto obtained a first-round right eventually associated with No. 5 Jonathan Bender. Billups's later NBA stardom is significant, but the Nuggets received only the beginning of his career and the inherited Wolves Win grades Minnesota B, Denver F and Toronto F.

Denver acquired Johnny Taylor; rights to Keon Clark from Orlando Magic for 1999 first-round pick (less favorable of Nuggets, Bucks picks) or 2000 first-round pick (Nuggets) (Magic's option) (2000 #10-Keyon Dooling).

Detroit traded the rights to No. 11 overall 1998 selection Bonzi Wells to Portland on January 22, 1999 for a conditional 1999 first-rounder later No. 27 Jumaine Jones and a 2000 second-rounder later No. 57 Scoonie Penn. The Pistons also cleared roughly $1.1 million in rookie-scale cap room, which the club says it used in its free-agent planning. Wells became a multi-season contributor for Portland, while Detroit later moved the acquired selections rather than getting equivalent player production. Blazers Win, Portland A- and Detroit B-.

New York acquired Latrell Sprewell for John Starks, Chris Mills and Terry Cummings, turning a distressed-asset gamble into an immediate 1999 Finals run and several seasons of high-level wing production.

The realized return strongly favored Houston: Houston received conditional first-round pick (2003 #25-Carlos Delfino) from Philadelphia 76ers for rights to Mirsad Turkcan.

San Antonio acquired Steve Kerr from Chicago on January 21, 1999 for Chuck Person and a conditional 2000 first-round pick that became No. 24 Dalibor Bagaric. Kerr played 131 regular-season games in his first Spurs stint and was part of the 1999 championship roster. Chicago waived Person four days after the trade and received 95 low-minute NBA games from Bagaric, leaving the Spurs with the stronger realized return despite Kerr's limited role.
