2000 NBA Trades

Boston acquired Bryant Stith and Chris Herren from Denver on October 16, 2000, sending Robert Pack and Calbert Cheaney to the Nuggets. Stith offered experienced wing scoring in Boston's 2000-01 rotation, while Herren received a limited hometown opportunity. Denver took two veterans for its roster but neither became a long-term centerpiece. Sacramento traded Corliss Williamson to Toronto for Doug Christie, adding the elite perimeter defender and connective passer who completed the Kings’ championship-caliber starting lineup.

On September 28, 2000, Chicago acquired guard Bryce Drew from Houston, sending conditional draft compensation that ultimately became 2005 No. 51 Robert Whaley and 2006 No. 46 Dee Brown, while the Rockets obtained a $1.8 million trade exception. The contingent first-round pick protection never created an unprotected first for Houston; the second-round fallback proved to be the relevant asset. Denver acquired Tracy Murray from Washington Wizards for Popeye Jones; second-round pick (2002 #38-Rod Grizzard).

New York moved 38-year-old Patrick Ewing through a four-team deal and received a large package of veterans and picks. The decision to move on was defensible, but the return never produced a durable successor core.

Indiana traded veteran All-Star Dale Davis to Portland for Jermaine O’Neal and Joe Kleine, creating a larger role for a 21-year-old prospect who became the Pacers’ next franchise centerpiece.

Cleveland sent Shawn Kemp to Portland in August 2000 and acquired Clarence Weatherspoon, Chris Gatling, Gary Grant, a conditional first-round choice and cash. The Trail Blazers obtained Kemp while Miami received Brian Grant through a sign-and-trade. Washington Wizards clearly won the completed-value comparison; Vancouver received Ike Austin but surrendered Dennis Scott; Cherokee Parks; Obinna Ekezie; Felipe Lopez.

Boston received Robert Pack; John Williams; 2001 first-round pick (#21 Joseph Forte); $3 million cash and sent Danny Fortson; Dana Barros in a multi-team trade involving Jazz, Mavericks, Warriors.

Cleveland acquired Matt Harpring for Andrew DeClercq, producing a clear Cavaliers win on realized player, draft and roster value.

Detroit converted Grant Hill’s chosen departure into Ben Wallace and Chucky Atkins, receiving the defensive foundation of the 2004 championship and a useful guard who later helped complete another title-building trade.

On August 3, 2000, Toronto completed a sign-and-trade that sent free agent Tracy McGrady to Orlando for a conditional future first-round pick. McGrady immediately became an elite scorer, won Most Improved Player in 2001 and later captured consecutive scoring titles with the Magic. Toronto did not simply hold the compensatory pick until 2005: the Raptors moved it to Detroit in February 2001 as part of the package that brought Jerome Williams and Eric Montross, so the pick's eventual use on Fran Vázquez belongs to a later chain rather than Toronto's direct return.

Miami received Eddie Jones and an immediate All-Star season from Anthony Mason, while Charlotte acquired Jamal Mashburn and P.J. Brown, an All-Star scorer and durable defensive anchor. Both teams improved roster fit and received meaningful playoff and later transaction value.

Boston acquired the rights to Croatian prospect Josip Sesar from Seattle in June 2000, sending two future second-round selections. One became associated with Earl Watson, who developed into a multi-season SuperSonics guard after a separate rights path. Sesar did not play in the NBA, leaving Boston with limited return. The inherited Oklahoma City franchise Win grades Seattle B+ to Boston C-.

Chicago acquired rights to Jamal Crawford, cash from Cavaliers for rights to Chris Mihm, producing a clear realized-value win.

Dallas received Eric Murdock; 2000 first-round pick (protected, else 2000 or 2001 second-round pick) (2000 #31-Dan Langhi) from Los Angeles Clippers and sent Sean Rooks in return.

Dallas received draft rights to Courtney Alexander from Orlando Magic and sent 2000 second-round pick (#31-Dan Langhi); 2001 first-round pick (lottery protected) (#23-Brandon Armstrong); $3M cash in return.

Dallas received draft rights to Eduardo Najera; 2001 second-round pick (#43-Kyle Hill) from Houston Rockets and sent draft rights to Dan Langhi in return.

Dallas received John Wallace; draft rights to Donnell Harvey from New York Knicks and sent Erick Strickland; draft rights to Pete Mickeal in return.

Houston acquired Jason Collier's draft rights and a protected 2001 first-round choice in exchange for Joel Przybilla's rights in June 2000. Milwaukee obtained an eventual NBA starting center in Przybilla, while Houston brought Collier into its NBA rotation and used the later No. 22 pick on Jeryl Sasser. The Clippers acquired Corey Maggette, Keyon Dooling, Derek Strong, a second-round pick and cash for one heavily protected future first. Maggette became a long-term twenty-point scorer before the pick finally conveyed at No. 22 in 2006.

On June 28, 2000, the Lakers bought draft rights to Cory Hightower from San Antonio for two future second-round picks, ultimately 2001 No. 55 Robertas Javtokas and 2002 No. 56 Randy Holcomb. The Lakers signed Hightower in August but waived him October 30 without a regular-season appearance. Neither later selection developed into Spurs NBA playing time, but San Antonio controlled two bona fide draft assets. Spurs Win on asset retention, C+ versus D+.

Cleveland acquired J.R. Reid and Robert 'Tractor' Traylor in a three-team deal; Golden State received Bob Sura and Vinny Del Negro, while Milwaukee received Jason Caffey and Billy Owens.

Denver received Voshon Lenard; Mark Strickland from Miami Heat, sending Chris Gatling; 2000 second-round pick (#37-Eddie House) in return.

Denver acquired 2000 first-round pick (#26-Mamadou N'diaye) from Utah Jazz for 2001 first-round pick (#21-Joseph Forte).

Atlanta moved Anthony Johnson to Orlando in February 2000 for a conditional future second-round pick. The Magic obtained immediate guard depth, while the Hawks received a delayed asset eventually associated with the 2004 No. 42 selection, Viktor Sanikidze. Chicago moved Toni Kukoč to Philadelphia in February 2000 and received John Starks, Bruce Bowen and a protected 2000 first-round right. Golden State acquired Larry Hughes and Billy Owens from the 76ers; Philadelphia received Kukoč. The original slight 76ers edge grades Philadelphia and Golden State A- and Chicago D. The Warriors' omitted incoming players are now reflected in the corrected three-team record.

Denver received Tariq Abdul-Wahad; Chris Gatling; first-round pick (lottery protected); later modified to rights to Omar Cook on 2001-06-27; and 1 additional asset from Orlando Magic, sending Ron Mercer; Chauncey Billups; Johnny Taylor in return.

In January 2000, Charlotte acquired veteran shooter Dale Ellis from Milwaukee for two second-round draft choices, later No. 49 Jason Hart in 2000 and No. 47 Chris Owens in 2002. Ellis contributed only briefly for Charlotte toward the end of his NBA career. The Bucks converted an expiring veteran into future draft options, including a selectable guard, but neither pick became a franchise cornerstone. Milwaukee receives B- for draft flexibility and Charlotte C- for a short-lived addition; the prior slight Bucks verdict is retained.
